started knocking today, bugger!

well jacked the car up and had a wiggle, there was a little bit on play in the off side but when it was all back together it didnt knock once and i couldnt get it to knock at all today !!
so could it be something else??? (would only knock on left hand turns)
could it be a stone?? it was quite a knock
what i cant understand is that the noise has totally gone (for now)
