Hey guys, rookie pistonhead-er here with serious need for help.

I'm in the market for a 90 or 110 defender station wagon but needing some advice please.

budget anything upto 7k, needing it to be in good reliable condition mechanically sound, interior doesnt need to be anythin special, would want to redo it over time anyway.I've read most of the threads and opinions seem split. I guess what I've worked out so far is....condition over age.

My questions are as follows,
is my budget realistic?
what are the main things to look out for?
I know that after '98 the td5 was introduced (is that correct) and apparently its ALOT more reliable but less easy to self maintain (not a problem i dont plan to), but more expensive to repair?
then you have 200 tdi and 300 tdi before that? and the 300tdi is the one to go for if not going for a td5?
i'l be using it 80% on road 20% off. i'm cool with the bumby ride and 'mechanical' feel to driving, sounds ace compared to the unattached feeling of driving modern cars.
so what should I be going for and what should I be looking out for so i dont buy a right lemon!

if y'al can be of some help and guidance....it'l be beers all around!

Bulkheads, bulkhead supporting x members and rear chassis are the weak point as far as rust goes.

Everything else is all down to common sense, check it all over carefully, have a really good look underneath it.

Higher mileage isnt a prob as long as its supported by service history.

Im in the same boat, have cash waiting here and looking for a quite specific spec.

Do you know what you want in spec and are you looking private or trade ?

spec wise, no mod cons (in the hope of keepin cost down!), so not lookin for a country edition. I'm lending towards a 110 due to the internal size.i dont want 9 seats, i'd take out all but front seats. Just a bit worried about the driving of a 110 compared to what looks like a quite compact 90, which is the same length as a 3 door audi A3 i think. i'm thinkin its gonna be somethin post 1994, preferably with no more than a 100k on the clock BUT if its got more on the clock yet in good nick then its not a cause for concern i guess. Cheers for the rust advice, i'd be gettin a AA inspection if bought private so hopefully they'd find that stuff out if its not visible to me. I'm lending towards trade mate, jus cos of the comeback if problems occur, BUT ya pay VAT so thats a nuisance. If its in good nick, checked over a ok and happens to be private then that'l b fine.

Unless something else tempts me, but Ive always wanted one these. This will be my 4th Landy tho, and I do miss the off road/landy scene.

Plus I just love driving the bloody things for some bizarre reason.

Where are you based ?

have you tried autotrader? are you lookin for a 90 or 110? damn metalic green, most gorgeous color, but most sought after equals BIG price! sounds like i'm lookin for the same as you, just a couple years older and not a country. need that FSH especially if its got high miles. how long have you been looking?it sounds like from all the other posts, that it could take some time to find the right one. based in wiltshire, nr Bath. classic landrover country, fields fields fields and more fields

Patience is the only answer my Dad took about a year to find "the right one". Never rush in on buying a Landy unless you don't mind spending the next 10 years getting it to the spec you want.

looks like i'm gonna have to look further afield, and increase my budget my a grand or two. I'm thinkin of gettin a hard top and gettin rear side windows put in, so to make it a 90 stationwagon but at a hard top price-any comments?good idea bad idea?

Good idea TD5 side windows are fairly cheap as well if it's a 110 tho it'll always be a 110 wink better offroad IMHO

What about an ex-military Defender?
Most likely to be a 300tdi, but wont have much rust and can be prepped to your standards.
www.ljacksonandco.com have lots and I've heard that they are £5,500 for a 110, but that was lat year.
It says the max millage on them is 40,000.

cheers man, just had a gander at the above website and they look good, looks like they can do onsite modifications as well which could be handy. If anyone knows of ex mod traders in south west england could ya let us know. The somerset/wiltshire region would be best

The d90 on here is a bit leggy for me I must admit, nice though it is.

Military trucks wont have the Tdi motor, unless you get a Wolf, and i dont think they are for general sale yet.The army motors will be 2.5 nat asp and horrid in my opinion.

ah good spot!yeah there are a few wolfs for sale but thinkin they may b a bit pricey, not sure though. not keen on the n/a 2.5, by the looks of it its pretty weak. any ideas any body with the natural bhp of a defender with a 300tdi engine?ball park figure'l do.
