Discover or Audi Q7?? Help!!
Discussion
I'm on with updating the family bus, we currently have a Volvo xc90 and it's ready for a change.
I'm currently torn between an Audi Q7 and a Land Rover Discovery.
From browsing with my notional £25k you get a much newer better equipped and lower millage Discovery.
As I say it's family use plus I use it to go to work when I don't want to take the Gallardo so I want a bit of luxury too.
Part of me likes the ruggedness of the Discovery, then part of me says their and ugly brute and I can't see the wife in a short skirt and heels in one, on the other hand I have had several Audis and loved them, but the Q7 looks a bit big and bland but maybe has a younger image?
Any experience especially if anyone has had both, greatly appreciated.

I looked at a Q7 just for comparison (the missus liked it). Essentially as with the XC90 or BMW X5 and Q7, these cars are essentially just a tweaked version of their estate car cousins, namely V90, 5 series and A6 and as such don't offer anymore room on the inside. The Discovery on the other hand is a Discovery, nothing has been lifted from another Land Rover model, it is a unique vehicle, just like a Porsche is a Porsche.
The Disco3 is not a compromise in any way. It is just as comfortable driving around town or long distance on the motorway, plus it can go up a mountain or over a desert! The others are just soft-roaders. (Fine for everyday use I might add.) The Disco 3 is huge inside and out, unlike the Q7 which is just enormous outside! The boxy nature of the design I think is fabulous and a classic not to out date itself too quickly. Innovative interior layout, with 7 seats and unique 'stadium seating for the second row passengers. I also think the quality of the interior materials to be far nicer than Audi's. Hooked up to the 6 speed auto gear box the 2.7TDV6 I think is just great. (3.0ltr Twin Turbo model due out in Sept'09, up from 190BHP to over 240BHP.)
All in all go for the HSE model. £25k may well get you a year old model. Go for the 2008.5MY as it has a few bits nicer (soft ruffled leather, electric steering coloumn etc.) 2009MY have body coloured bumpers and wheel arches, different 19inch alloys.
I would plump for the Land Rover. But that's just me.

What's the commission you get these days Gaz? The Disco3 is not a compromise in any way. One other thing, the Volvo feels slow enough already and on paper the Discovery is slower, Is it really?
Are there any must have options apart from auto and nav?
I'm looking at either an 6 month old 08 plate XS or a 12 month old 57 plate SE, is there any significant differance? Both have with nav auto and leather?

Between the two you mention definitely the Discovery, it's the real deal compared to the Audi IMO.
What about a Rangie though if you want a bit more luxury?
I did fancy a RR but having sat in one they feel massive and didn't sem as practical as the Discovery, plus you pay a lot more or have a much older car. What about a Rangie though if you want a bit more luxury?
That was my thought anyway.

Buy the highest spec you can. Disco's don't really have options per se. If you want more options you buy the next model up. i.e. An SE over an XS, or the HSE over the SE etc. As with each increase in model, more options become 'standard.' The only real options then are things like factory fit privacy glass, rear air-con (standard on some years, options on others) or wood veneers/colour combo's, front fridge. It isn't a very fast car, but then it isn't meant to be. It weighs 2.8T's! It can haul easily at 80MPH and has enough torque to overtake. If you want power consider a TDV8 Range Rover Sport?
As for the differences in spec, my 08.5MY brochure says the XS doesn't come with leather, Satnav or auto gearbox as standard. You will therefore not have heated seats, smaller alloys, no front PDC. If you go for the SE you will have most of this as standard already otherwise you will have to do your research and see what are the must haves and see if you can find an XS with these fitted.
If you go for the HSE, all you need to think about is the colour.

Having owned both as well as a Cayenne, the Disco wins every time for me.
That's very interesting. especialy as you have had both a Q7 and a Discovery (and a Cayenne.)What makes it the winner from your expierance?
Brought the wife a Q7. Drives reasonably well but huge on the outside and small (by comparison) on the inside. Eats tyres in 7k miles, difficult to find a parking space that it will fit in. Rear seats are no good for adults and load capacity is compromised by rear door opening. Limited off road capability. Quality cabin but the overall package is not as good at you envisage once you have lived with it for a while.
Disco is by far the most practical and can be justified over an estate car. Doesn't seem to suffer from the image problem the other two have. It's a lux vehicle, MPV (Can carry 7 adults in comfort), Off Roader and load carrier all in one vehicle. Good value when you consider the spec you get on a HSE compared to a fully optioned Q7. Yes, it is slower than the others and the interior fit and finish is not as good as the Q7,but my kids are in it 90% of the time and it will cruise at 100 leptons if you wish. The drop down tail gate means you don't get your clothes dirty reaching into the boot as you do with the others. It has pockets everywhere for all the kids/wife's rubbish and a fridge for drinks. Off road ability is unbelievable and in this weather great fun.
I would pick the discovery.
Also for £25 i can find a lot of HSE tdv6 autos for that price. at 07 plates and newer.
Rememeber, if you have a local landrover dealer, go see them and enquire about disco 3 hse's and state what your looking for and how much you would like to spend. A good dealer should be able to find a good hse for that price. You would also get a decent landrover warrenty with it.
Good luck with finding a good car

Ahhhm the power of the web! Thanks for the help guys.
Well done. Happy motoring!
Anyway, I've bought it, it's only 6 months old so it must be ok!!!
Picking it up Wednesday hopefully, rather excited!
O/H has just bought another one. The original 05 plate was bogus, we had soooooo many problems with it. The new one however is fantastic! It's black with 09 HSE spec - an amazing car. It's been a great load carrier for us and is amazing in the snow up here in Aberdeen.
Due to the amount of problems we had with the 05 plate, O/H was understandably nervous about buying another one. We too looked at the Q7's,FFRR along with quite a few others. The Disco won hands down.
He can't quite keep up with me in my TT but he wasn't far behind on our latest London - Aberdeen run. (Mind you he was laden down with over half a ton of stereo/tv equipment!)
There is also a great Disco forum www.disco3.co.uk with extremely knowledgable members.
You'll love it
