There are five LR owners in the office, they are always talking about the issues with their cars, the dealer's inability to fix them and the genearally poor service they get from the dealers

A few years ago a then colleague asked a relation that worked at LR which he should buy - the answer . . . . . a Landcruiser.

As for Toyota, they aren't immune to issues. And they don't really sell anything directly comparable to most LR products. At least not in the UK market. So they make for a bit of a non choice option really.
I've just gone back to Toyota after 20 years of Land Rover ownership (all Discoveries). In fairness, I've never been stranded by a LR, but I don't think I spent a lot of time without one or other warning lamp on the dash (orange=ignore!). My GF used to refer to them as "Christmas trees". When I sold the second-to-last one, it had 5 warning lamps. The last one got written off by a half-awake truck driver. My favourite was the TD5 Disco 2.

I have a pretty well-equipped workshop (agricultural contractor) and parts are generally reasonably priced. The guys at Rimmer Brothers recognise my voice when I call (not sure this is a good thing! smile ) I wouldn't want to pay main dealer prices for all the niggly things to be sorted.

TBH one of the reasons for the change was that I was offered a Hilux at a very good price. Time will tell. It's certainly a big old bus compared to the Disco!

The new ingenium diesel engine is ste. Mid 40's mpg, DPF which blocks for fun.
I would not entertain another JLR product.

In terms of reliability LR came 22nd in a recent J D Power survey.

Audi were 23rd; BMW 25th.

Jaguar were 17th and Toyota 9th.

Seems that if you want reliability above all else a Hyundai is for you............
I Googled:-

"UK Car Reliability Survey"

This was the first response

https://www.whatcar.com/news/2018-what-car-reliabi...

In the Luxury SUV section, Range Rover were least reliable.
So the OP’s right. Mixed messages.
Mixed messages?

Hardly!

21 out of 24 in the J D Power survey and

least reliable in the What Car survey.

Message is quite clear - not mixed at all. Range Rover are unreliable.

We have been running a 1st Gen Evoque as a family run about for 5 years now - Dynamic Lux model. It has covered c.36k miles and we have not had a warranty on it for about 3 years or more. Aside from consumables such as tyres and brake pads (replaced once), we have never had anything go wrong with it in the whole 5 years. The dealer did mention when the minor 'face-lift' came a couple of years ago that they were finding newer cars had more issues and actually he thought the 1st gen was more reliable. No idea if that is true but it has been a good runner for us ... touch wood!

Correct, it’s dreadful. My fathers DS has recently had the engine out to replace the balancer shafts, which is another common problem. Awful, overpriced pile of rubbish. Meanwhile, my Forester is now 5 years old, just had its service and MOT and everything is spot on.

+1. And which is why we have switched to alternatives. There are plenty of other manufacturers offering similar, and in some cases better products.

So glad my DS is the first edition with the 2.2 Ford derived engine, not the Ingenium.

Mrs Picked up her First Edition today - great looking thing and drives well too. Owned the previous gen for 3 years (Dynamic Lux) never missed a heartbeat...not a single issue with that one. Let's hope this one behaves too! Not sure about the rest of the range but this one (First Edition) uses some premium feeling materials and feels good inside,

First Edition Aka Late Verification Build Prototype ! Hope it works out well but first in first out might be a good idea.

It will be interesting to see how these work out. I agree with the earlier comments about there being a lot of Ford left in the original Evoque (a good thing). A beautiful groundbreaking design in Julian Thompson’s gen 1, McGovern’s gen 2 has been velarised and to my mind is less characterful. This is all Tata invested JLR engineering management.... already 12 months late due to Tata subcontract engineers screwing up the front crash structure design. If the warranty bill / buy back rate of these turns out to be similar to recent products such as the Discovery Sport then it will be a taxi for Mr Speth and Co. If not already ordered !

The ingenium diesel is a disaster engine , I’d half the oil service intervals if you want it to last outside warranty. Chocolate balancer shaft bearing not helped by oil dilution from an emissions system that drinks more ad blue than diesel. Software MMI or Engine/Transmission calibration is not a JLR forte. So the less tech, C&I integration the better on any JLR product.

Don't buy an Evoque - with or without a warranty.

Buy almost anything other than a JLR.

Toyota would good.

p.s. If she does buy an Evoque, you won't be short of material for posts on here!

I'm struggling to tell the difference between that and the Velar.

Oh dear...you must really struggle with the C, E and S Class then or the A4, A6 or maybe and also the 3,5 and 7 series?

And with JLR now hit with a massive emissions scandal, likely a trip to the dealer required.

Not really at first glance it is a clone of the Velar, you've got to admit.
However 3 and 5 series do also look very similar.

As I said before, glad my DS is a 2015 2.2. No Ingenium engine to be concerned about so no recall needed.

If 44,000 JLR cars is 'massive', how would you describe 11,000,000 Volkswagens?

I suppose they do make 60 times the number of cars JLR do a year.
