Alternatives to a full fat Range Rover?
Discussion
As much as I've loved our LR products, the split tailgate on the FFRR we had meant we had to use a ramp (or brute strength) to get our dog in. He just couldn't jump up 'on' to the lower tailgate in the same way he could jump into other boots. It's a minor issue in the big scheme of things but when you have a 35kg muddy labrador who is refusing to cooperate, it does matter somewhat.
Likewise our 2 x D4s.
We currently have a Cayenne S (4.2d) which is lovely but doesn't waft like a RR, even with optional air suspension. That said, I don't drive it with a subconscious fear of something going wrong.

I’ve had quite a few Porsches:- 3no 911s, 2no Taycans, Panamera, Macan Turbo, Boxster S etc. Most of them have been very unreliable compared to expectation. The worst being my last Taycan which was brand new. It was atrocious. Can’t see myself buying another Porsche tbh. Very disappointing given I’d spent £100k on it. Personally as a marque I think Porsche are the worst marque I’ve owned (and I’ve has somewhere in excess of 100cars).LR’s on the other hand have been much more reliable; I’m going to regret saying that I know!
Edited to add - when I say Porsche are probably the worst, I mean from a reliability perspective, they make cracking cars to drive and travel in, I also found that in recent years the dealership after-sales experience is poor. In recent years my favourite dealer experiences are Aston, Volvo and Kia but that’s hugely down to having good relationships with those dealers - very much traditional styles and values.

Have a read on my experience & make up your own mind.
Can’t think of anything I’d rather own & am still delighted with it.

18 reg 4.4’s available for £40k now landrover used approved. That’s good value surely.
If it’s the one I’m thinking of then it has over 80k on the clock, added to the fact that dealer has a very poor reputation. I’d personally say overpriced by 4-5k.W12GT said:

You also need to factor in the amount your insurance will pay you when it's inevitably stolen, plus the amount you have to pay to insure it in the first place. I'd love one in principle, but I don't need the aggro and would pick something else.
I'm small town, semi-rural so some of the concerns around thefts are mitigated compared to urban areas. However there is still a jump from £500 for the Volvo to £1k for the age/spec of RR I'm looking at. X5/Q7 were coming in around the same for me.As an aside, when did the UK Gov and Police just accept this industrial-scale thieving of vehicles? Why has the CEO of Land Rover not been hauled into parliament to explain why their cars are so damn easy to steal?
There's a Youtube channel, Automatrics, who do vehicle trackers and record their recovery attempts. Half the time the cops can barely be arsed when they get asked to attend.
I wish I hadn't started watching this thread. I have found myself drawn towards Autotrader and there look to be some amazing bargains out here. Like a 2021 D300 Westminster with 22,000 miles on it for £53k, that's a deal isn't it?
Will it go wrong? It will, won't it? I promised myself I'd never do this again, but...

In the meantime, JLR is obviously worried about being hauled over the coals by prospective buyers, let alone parliament. So they're investing heavily (or not much, depending on your perspective) on beefing up security for new models and older ones susceptible to easy attack.

That looks great! Less than half what you’d pay for a new one. Will it go wrong? It will, won't it? I promised myself I'd never do this again, but...

The new LR mild-hybrid diesels are very good. I have the D350 and hit 50mpg on one run this year. You’ll easily get 40mpg on a run with a D300. And it has loads of waftey torque

i’ve had a similar dilemma to the OP over the years. I loved my Range Rover but it was hideously unreliable and the dealership ‘support’ was very poor.
I really really wish LR could build (and maintain) a better quality product, but people keep buying them so I guess they don’t really need to…
2nd one and loved it, but then throttle body needed to be replaced, waited 18 months backorder.I really really wish LR could build (and maintain) a better quality product, but people keep buying them so I guess they don’t really need to…
Got stolen-maybe for parts-trcker found in scrap yard but plod not interested.
Shame loved it but insurance costs-support terrible JLR or Tata killing the product especially in the UK.

My lads a qualified JLR mechanic, says cars are badly made and the 3.0L diesel is very bad news. I’ve had them, neighbour has a 3.0L which snapped its crank, it’s a problematic engine sadly, mix in theft and insurance.
Lovely cars, none of the bive quite the same experience, but with fewer challenges.
