I would pick the discovery.

Also for £25 i can find a lot of HSE tdv6 autos for that price. at 07 plates and newer.

Rememeber, if you have a local landrover dealer, go see them and enquire about disco 3 hse's and state what your looking for and how much you would like to spend. A good dealer should be able to find a good hse for that price. You would also get a decent landrover warrenty with it.

Good luck with finding a good car smile
£25!!! Can I ask where you saw that - I think I might be purchasing a few of them LOL

I think he was being hilariously funny by saying where can you get one for £25 not £25,000.

Anyway, you can also get a fully approved used 6 month old SE with 10k on it for £25k from a franchised dealer, trust me!

Interestingly a couple of the cars I inquired about had had their prices revised up since I spotted them, one by £1800 so I think things have definitely bottomed out.

I'm not sure things have bottomed out as such - I would imagine the current bad weather (and 24hr news reports) have lead to an increase in demand (or at least interest in) more 'capable' vehicle. Probably a little like convertables in a heatwave.

I have had a Q7 for a year. Superb car, pulls a double axle caravan with five bikes, three kids and a dog. Put four snow tyres on it, a dream in deep deep snow. Beats a disco hands down on the road and is more that suitable for 99% of offroad jaunts. more reliable too. missus have given up taking it into multi stories tho and to be honest its too big for town driving.

Disco doesn't need snow tyres to help aid it's progress in the snow!

Q7 is slightly better on the road but does not beat it hands down!

Total rubbish. The Disco will beat the Q7 off road hands down.

more reliable too.

Again, this is not true in my experience of owning both.

Fair enough, disco certainly better offroad, been using the audi in serious snow in the last few months and its been superb as would the disco with four snow tyres. dont know what the disco is fitted with as standard but if they are normal road tyres it will be crap in the snow, four wheel drive or not. have seen two in aberdeenshire ditches in the last month. Interesting point, having worked in africa for eight years where reliability is life or death I saw one disco, every other car was a jap landcruiser. and the UN dicking around in white range rovers. Mind, didnt see any audis either...

Interesting debate, but to the original point of this post irrelevant as I have bought the Discovery!!biggrin

I did look at a Q7 and it was close, I love Audis, had 4 of them and really appreciate the build quality, however the Q7 felt even more massive than the Discovery, don't know if it actualy is but it felt it, and the Q7 was a bit more austere and especially in S line trim (all black interior including headlining) very dark and to me oppressive.

The other thing that got me, for my usage chucking bikes and kids clobber in and out, because the Q7 has a normal tailgate rather than the split tailgate, you have to reach stuff over the rear bumper and its all to easy to scratch it, as demonstrated by the brand new one in the showroom which was scuffed to hell.

The reliability thing did concern me as I know and love the way Audis are build, and for sure the quality of some on the interior plastics on the Discovery isn't quite as good, but it's still all feels nice.

To me it boiled down to this, the Q7 felt very functional but a bit austere, the Discovery felt more comfy and cosseting, Modern techno pub Vs Gentlemens club if you like.

Anyway, it's here now, so I'll try and get a pic up!

Sounds good, Q7 is a bit of a nightmare in town, particularly parking, although we never really use it that much in the city. It does look terrible pimped up but mine is pretty plain.

As standard, the Disco come with road tyres - P Scorpion in my case. The reason why it doesn't need snow tyres is due to it's Terrain Response®, standard on derivatives with Air suspension, allows you to take on every surface with confidence. A turn of the dial reconfigures the engine, transmission, suspension and Traction settings for optimum driveability in all conditions: tarmac, deep ruts, grass, snow, mud, and sand.

All good stuff, but all the electronics dont help if you dont have grip. I guess the scorpions are good tyres, the standard tyres with the Q7 were purely road based and hopeless in the mud/snow. Ironically there was disco series II crashed into a wall (tight bend packed with snow) this morning, its a regular thing in aberdeenshire ie four x fours in ditches, its down to a false sense of security we probably all have. Actually rather like the disco myself but the missus think it looks like a shoebox.

Next time there is a good dump of snow, head to your local LR dealer and take a test drive. You will be amazed how good it is on standard road tyres. Once you have played in thick snow, find the steepest, iciest slope, engage HDC, and head down the hill. I have done lots of off roading in my car and never felt the need to fit off road tyres due to lack of grip. However, the sidewalls on standard road tyres take a hammering on some off road courses.
