Probably best not to mention the common Qashqai/Juke gearbox problems. Nor the gearbox, a/c and battery electrical issues suffered by the Toyota C-HR.
But Land Rover, ooh bad. Bloke in pub said so.
They aren't sold as a 'premium' product though are they? You expect cheap stuff to be crap.
That sounds like you concede that Toyotas and other Japanese small SUVs are crap and therefore their reliability reputation is vastly overstated and is of little use as a comparison yardstick.
No, they exceed expectations, whereas LR fail to live up to theirs. YMMV.

Lots of supposedly premium German metal have engine problems and you pay through the nose for them.

Just finished reading about a FMBSH Merc with a conrod through the block, just 22k for their 'premium' engine replacement sir.
Premium, my arse. Cheap turd, rolled in glitter.
YMMV of course. smile

The myth of German reliability - I'm with you there. A lie repeated often enough becomes the truth.

I have to say it's the far eastern stuff that generally is the most reliable but even my wife's Honda vtec drank oil like it had shares in OPEC. Always went well though...

Thought Ford generally made solid engines too but just been told by a chap at work that his ecoboost(?) thing, the one with the belt inside the engine oil (WTF?) needs to be pulled apart just as the warranty pings.

They make these things to fail, it's just finding the built in weak points and strengthening them before they st their pants.

JLR have long had very varied dealership responses. Manchester/Stockport - rubbish and Sheffield brilliant in my experience. Then I bought a Tesla as my Jaguar test drives were rubbish. My X-type Daimler estate designed in the last millenium had specs not far short. Tesla is an example of great service. Rear light leaking - engineer came to my home to fix it. Problem with position of window switches meant I left windows open when exiting rapidly in the rain - electronic option to close windows on locking - delivered OTA. Warranty repair to front suspension and no car available so was given £70 Uber voucher for the day. JLR have a lot to learn.

Now approaching 5 years ownership of our Freeloader 2 SD4 Auto. It still hasn't really gone wrong. It does a fairly low mileage, gets an annual oil change service, although the last 12 months it has needed front and rear discs and pads, new rear tyres and a new battery (that helped grumpy starting to a degree) they are obvs just consumables.
Now loathe to sell as apart from replacing the front tyres within the next 6 months it should provide another year of trouble free motoring.
However don't really want to keep until it becomes scrap. A Disco Sport still seems the most obvious/likely replacment, just wondering if anyone plumping for the 2.0 lump bothers with aftermarket warranties or are they not worth the paper they are written on?

Your Freelander 2 does not have the Ingenium engine. It has a 2.2 Ford engine.

I have had a LR DS since December 2016. It is is the very first version so it has the same Ford engine as your FL2. A few months after being launched the DS had the Ingenium fitted instead of the Ford.

Reading what I have about the Ingenium engine, I'm glad I have the Ford. Only obvious issue is it is Encap 5 whereas the Ingenium is Encap 6.

My car is now at 55,000 or so miles. Had no real issues at all, now get it serviced etc. at a local indy.

The car came with a JLR warranty for the remainder of its 3 years and I have had an extended warranty since for peace of mind. I've had two warranty claims all uncontested.

I'm not an Ingenium owner, but in terms of aftermarket warranties a) you may be on the hook for strip down and diagnosis costs until such point the engineer/mechanic can demonstrate that the fault is covered under the T&Cs of the policy (and I suspect they'd be looking to see if it had been serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's exact schedule and parts spec), and b) you'd need to make sure you got one with a sufficiently high claims limit to cover the cost of a new engine. Quite often, on an older car the limits are quite low - especially those provided by independent dealers which people then choose to renew.

A diesel (D180) Discovery Sport would generally be OK if it’s had regular oil changes, preferably annually / 12K miles, as otherwise the SCRF (a fancy DPF) debacle can cause oil dilution and subsequent issues.

The D240 (twin turbo Ingenium) had a different exhaust configuration and doesn’t suffer the same dilution issue.

Yes, I realise ours have the more reliable but clattery Ford lump, I was just contrasting it / gloating. I guess an early 2.2 DS is an option unless ULEZ gets rolled out everywhere.

The 2.2 isn’t lez compliant for Glasgow, which means the OH will need to get a 2.0 and a 2016 or newer for it.

Looking at a 2018+ model for the future for her when we have the ability to move up.
Needs to have everything my FL2 metropolis has plus power tailgate.

I’ll be changing the oil every 10k with a vacuum pump.
I think the 21k oil intervals are way too long

Mate has a 2.0 diesel ingenium in an XE. It’s a 2015 model. Took it for an MoT and failed on a cool spring. Decided to take it to the dealer to get that and an early service sorted and was sent a video of quite loud timing chain rattle at all revs and a healthy £2400 quote to fix it.

7 years old. 44,000 miles. Always been dealer serviced
How the hell can a timing chain and/or chain tensioner replacement cost 2 and a half grand?
Because the engine has to come out to fit the new timing chain. Brilliant piece of engineering. Most of the cost I'd guess is labour...

There was a thread a while back where a guy bought an F-Pace with a borked Ingenium engine and managed (eventually) to rebuild it. Some discussion on the shortcomings of the engine.

Was there ever a Daimler X-Type?

I think specs are required if you think it’s a Daimler X-Type!
