Hi

I'm about to put down a deposit on the new Discovery. I'll test drive both the 4 and 6 cylinder diesel.

But I just wondered what peoples thoughts on both engines are ? I wont be towing.

On the face of it they look pretty similar on specs. Sales guy insists they are both as quiet as each other.

thx in advance.

Thanks CornishRob

The TD6 is "only" 1500 more.

I've tried to find info on the engine (year designed etc) to work out if it might be replaced soon and how it would stack up to new emissions tests etc.

You wouldnt know where I could find that info ?

Yes, my head is saying the 4 cylinder but heart is saying 6.

There is surprisingly little info on the 6 pot engine - as far as I can tell it is a left over from the BMW days.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I had decided on the V6 and now I'm not sure again!

This is my worry with the V6 ... it is an old engine and my guess is it will be replaced by an Ingenium V6 in a year or so.

The issue is whether this V6 in 3 years time is going to either be a liability due to emissions/tech and/or it will have been replaced and no one will want "the old V6" model.

It just sounds like a new V6 is around the corner.

Anyone know someone at the engine unit to find out ?!

Ok, so just came back from test driving the V6 - and have placed an order for it.

The V6 is EU5 standard engine, the 4 is EU6.

The V6 was a bit noisier than I was expecting but it pulled very well. Plenty enough acceleration for such a big car. Having been in a 4 pot Evoque I would say the Evoque was quieter.

I also spoke to a friend this afternoon who until very recently was a JLR salesperson and he recommended the V6. His view was that the 4 pot was having issues as it was new and that the economy figures were very similar in real world driving.

So the big difference is EU5 vs EU6 - https://www.carwow.co.uk/blog/eu5-and-eu6-engines-...

The actual difference being Nitrogen Oxides 0.18 (EU5) vs 0.08 (EU6)

I'm not sure the TD6 has AdBlue/DEF. The 4 pot definitely has DEF.

Correct.

From 2020 you wont be able to drive any diesel in central London without it being EU6 compliant or paying a surcharge. But it really is the centre of London - from Westminster to the City.

But I doubt it will have that great an effect. Its already prohibitively expensive to drive into the congestion zone as it is.

Salesman said that to me today.

The V6 engine is quite old, but the 4 pot is new.

But the only difference between Eu5 and EU6 is the nitrogen - and AdBlue sorts that out. (From what I've read in the links I've added)

So I dont see why that cant be added - obviously AdBlue is nothing to do with the engine itself.

I've emailed the dealer to find out.

They've just replied to my email and said it takes AdBlue - which would make me think it has to be EU6 also. I've asked for a definitive answer.

I put down a deposit on the TD6 yesterday...arrives in April - so my decision is made whatever the answer.

OK, dealer now saying its EU6. Sorry I passed on duff info.

So i think its a no brainer...no point in buying the 4 pot unless you are going for a low/entry spec.

Hi Harry

Regarding the pack...its not decided yet apparently, but on its way according to my dealer. I think its either 599 or 699 for 3 years.

TD6 service interval is 16k according to this - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/specs/detail/?v=M12704...

In the HSE spec, I think the price difference is only 1500 pounds between 4 and 6 cylinders.

I think resale will be better with the 6 pot, and the engine more suits the luxury style of the new car. And in the real world, I dont believe the 4 cylinder economy figures with such a large car.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You may be right about a newer 6 pot at some point.

But the current 6 pot engine is new, albeit based on an older heavier design.

If they did create an Ingenium 6 pot, I doubt it would be much different in power/torque/economy to the current one - maybe 10% better? But it would be lighter.

Still glad i bought the 3L. Suits the car very well - get about 35mpg on motorways - but overtaking is effortless.
