Thanks all for your help! After a bit of research it appears that the two I'm after are already taken but not being used - 1 has a ad landing page on it where someone is making money off the traffic. the other one just diverts to google whenever you type in the address but is registered to someone else.

How can I get my hands on these?

By finding the owner using WHOIS and then approaching them to buy, otherwise get a backorder setup so IF its ever dropped you may have a chance to grab it.

Is there no other URL you could get because it can be a lot of pissing about!

.eu sure.

I did Pistonheads.it for ted, but tbh it was a REAL pita.. so much paperwork involved that we dont offer them on the Register1 brand.

right looking at the WHOis it appears it's registered until 2009, so is the only option I have to email them and ask them what they want for it?

Yes, essentially. And don't be surprised if you get

a) no response

b) a ridiculous number

Domain names are like number plates; everyone who owns one generally thinks it's worth far more than it really is.

Thanks tim, will let everyone know how I get on. Looking at the details I'm expecting it to be b as they seem to be a company that just bulk buy domains and wait for someone to approach them to buy them / live off the advertising traffic.

Not necessarily. I have a lot of domain names which are parked in this way (I use www.sedo.com - one of the largest domain name sellers). It's entirely possible someone just registered it and have it parked like that because it earns them a few quid in advertising revenue.

In fact, search www.sedo.com for the domain you're interested in to see if it's listed for sale.

Ok, it says that it is registered but they can 'acquire it' for me. Before I get in touch with them, does anyone know how this process works exactly - are they going to try and rip me off or will they be able to get me a good deal?

Thanks

SEDO are quite safe to use. They will approach the owner on your behalf and allow you to negotiate between yourselves, using SEDO as the mechanism to communicate and ultimately purchase.

If you get ripped off, it's more likely to be over the asking price from the owner. wink

You don't honestly expect to get an answer to that, do you?

Right, not going through SEDO as I don't agree with their pricing structure. Looks like a bit of a scam / rip off to me.

The whois search says it is registered with register.com - who are these people? Is there any other brokers i can go through or am I just better off contacting the contact listed on register.com whois information and asking how much they want for it?

bloody complicated this domain lark...hehe

Sedo aren't a scam as such, their fees on the other hand might be! I made a bit of cash (and by a bit I mean maybe a fiver, but then the domains were bought while high rather than as a considered investment) from a couple of domain names a while back, until said names were judged too offensive by Sedo. It's probably your best way of communicating with the seller, register are likely to ignore your email tbh.

If you have some spare time look up the history of sex.com, it's quite interesting.

The best place to deal in domains and sites is DigitalPoint or SitePoint in my opinion - they're just forum marketplaces but I've done so many deal on these sites.. as long as you're not stupid and deal with dodgy sods.

I haven't traded on digitalpoint but as long as you steer clear of the many scammers (% wise not a lot on there but it has so many active members it sometimes take a while before the mods remove them) and only deal with long term members , or those with a good reputation - it is a fantastic website.

I also use www.acorndomains.co.uk which I find more useful for .co.uk DN's....as well as giving details of expired/deleted DN's.

Personally I have not had any bad experiences with Sedo. I park quite a few DN's with them. They also have a forum within acorn. I've read some horror stories from members of Sedo but in all fairness to Sedo, they always try to resolve any issues. But like any website there will always be people that mess things up, new members that bid on DN's for the sake of it....like idiots on ebay!

Thanks guys, I will have a look at those sites. The thing with SEDO is, you pay $69 up front, which is non refundable. Then they set the market value of the domain name - which you have to agree to pay up to 70% of the value before they even start to negotiate.

What's to stop them setting the market value too high? And that's an easy £34.50 for them if there is no reply from the registered holder of the domain.
