Probably the best result.

The other employees will now see him as someone who didnt want his job or be part of the team rather than a maverick who you would pander to at whim. You also dont have to run the risk of repercussions of discipline.

Are you making him work his notice, or are you making it immediate?

I have often thought that unless your business will die without their notice period that the risk of them badmouthing to other employees, or jeopordising your business is just not worth it, and I have accepted their resignation immediately and not enforced the 4 week notice period, much to their surprise.
