Seeing as there seems to be a lot of us in the same boat how about setting up some kind of PistonHeads networking scheme? Personally the trouble I have is attracting the right type of clients, and currently all my work is on word of mouth. Maybe we could devise some kind of referral scheme??
I suggested a PH Business Directory about 18 months ago and good ol' Ted responded with this:
www.pistonheads.com/members/remember/links.asp
I never even knew that existed.....
Research... know your Network!
1. 15- started building and selling computers to friends and family- made a surprisingly large amount of money for a teenager. First "real" business started at 22. Invested about £100k
2. In partnership as couldn't raise ALL the investment above by myself
3. Still going 5 years later, just looking at branching into different things.
Always been too much of an arrogant arse to work for someone else! Being in business means you have to haev the confidence to "know" you made the right decision and not spend ages second guessing yourself. You also need the humility to realise when you have totally ed up as i did with one of my projects- not so scared of failing any more though which means i will take more risks and put more on the line in the future. You only learn by falling over and then picking yourself up again!

I think the business directory is a great idea - I'd always rather deal with a fellow PH'er.
My business was started in 2001, I was 25 (my partner was 26), start up capital was around £150k, just over £1.5m profit last year. I'm looking at selling the firm this year if the right offer comes along. Like others have said, I'm technically unemployable now - probably a good thing.
