Only just got back from holiday to find my payslip and my final tax/NI paid this year.

I get paid a salary of £X, but I have only been working for 9 months or so of the last tax year, but have been taxed (I assume) at rates as if I had worked the full year - so using an online calculator I have paid several hundred £ more tax than I should have.

Will this be refunded to me as a cheque, or will it be taken off this years tax code etc?

it should be reapid to you, though invariably if you just leave it then it wont happen!

Wait until you get your P60 then either write to or visit your local tax office and request a refund.

What's your tax code? if you are on a month/week 1 tax code you may well have overpaid tax, but if it is a regular tax code which is cummulative, it re-adjusts for the months you haven't worked and should be accurate.

Regarding NI, this is not cummulative and is based on what you have earned that month.

This is worked out as follows: monthly gross, if it is less than £2904, take away the employee threshold of £435 and multiply by 11%. Anything above £2904 is charged at an extra 1%.

i,e monthly earnings of £4000, would be (2904-435*11%)+(4000-2904*1%)= £282.55.

Hope that makes sense, and make sure you are not looking at Employers National insurance contributions.
