What exactly do you need to know?

I've produced some simple vehicle graphics, nothing too fancy. It was nice and simple - arrange the layout in the software (signlab IIRC), send it to the cutter, get a big table and carefully remove the bits you don't want, then put the application paper over the top.

Doing is the best way to learn smile

Just some general advice really at the mo.

I've connected up the cutter, stuck in some vinyl, fiddled around with the settings and managed to cut some lettering out.

Stuff that would be handy

1) advice on setting cutter depth and cutter pressure.
2) how to create a sticker using two colours. ok split the item up and cut the colour separatly but whats the easiest way to put them together.
3) good places for supply
4) good places to get logos
5) best methods to apply..

cheers

Replies in order of questions

1. The knife should only cut the top layer (i.e. leave a faint outline on the silicone backing, to much on this and you've cut to deep and it will be difficult to seperate the letters/numbers from the backing when you peel the transfer tape, always peel the backing paper away from the transfer tape), this will come from experience the more you cut the more you'll know when it's right.

2. Easier if done within the software, sometimes you layer, sometimes you apply cut outline after depends on the opacity of the vinyl, and complexity of the design. This can all be done in CorelDraw and then sent down to the plotter.

3. There are quite a few suppliers out there, again depends on quality of material you are looking for, and life expectancy, and the main one depth of the wallet tongue out.

4. www.brandsoftheworld.com but they don't always do them all, you'll have to learn to vectorize smile, so look for that copy of CorelDraw or Illustrator.

5. There are some who say it's best to apply wet, others say dry (i.e. spray item which is to receive sticker with solution of small amount of washing up liquid and water, you can then move the vinyl around a lot more, and always squeegie from the middle to the edge.) Always ensure all wax and dirt has been removed from the receiving item (I use Isopropyl which I get from the local chemists) before the application stage though.

You could always buy a couple of the cheap rolls on ebay and play away, getting the feel of everything, that's how a lot of us started.

Hope the above helps

Saf Ta,

The thing thats confusing me at the moment is the corrolation with setting the cutter depth and the cutting force. I understand the depth ( I think) but seem to have to adjust both depth and force to stop it ripping the vinyl

.

Im currently struggling with tying to figure out in signblazer how to take bits away... i.e. i need to make an egg shape with a round hole in it.. I can make the egg and the circle but they are two items in different colours rather than one item with a whole.... I suppose i could just make it a black circle in a black egg and that would cut it ahhh, and maybe the same with the overlaying text...

Hi Graham,

Don't use Signblazer myself, I just use CorelDraw with a plug-in called SignCut.

If you haven't got a vector program I'd recommend you get one.

Have a look at www.signchatterforums.co.uk the author of Signblazer visits there, and he could help you more with any of the questions on the software.

Cheers
saf

oops forgot to say my plotter is an old Roland ColorCamm PC60 printer/plotter that's why I use the plug-in rather than a full standalone (having said that though SignCut can be used as a standalone) as I need the print option.
