Getting started in event management...
Discussion
Should have maybe posted this in the business section but it's always busier here so...
Does anyone have any tips or advice for someone (me) interested in event management? Good companies to talk to, books/websites etc. to look at? or anything else I might find useful.
I would like to run my own events company one day and have experience organising entertainment programmes on cruise ships if that helps.
Look forward to hearing what the hive mind has to say about this.

PH member "nutsoncars" does recruitment for Events staff. Suggest you locate him and send a PM.
Your first stop will be as an events assistant or event coordinator. It's not very glamorous until you do your own thing but the best training will be to start off in a big corporate like Informa or someone like that doing corporate events. There is far more competition in the 'party' side of the market so you are best to get good training first then pursue the more glamorous side. But to be fair, organising someone's big party is no different to doing a corporate event. It's heavy heavy admin either way.

Hi
Its not an easy industry to infiltrate, event management is a highly skilled job and requires lots of experiance so you may well have to start right at the bottom, try getting a job as a production assistant with an event company, its very long hours sometimes but the perks make up for this most of the time. I work for one of the leading temporary power providers in the Uk and have managed temp power installation work, for the concerts at wembley, festivals, corporate entertainment, and things like the openng of the new Chanel tunnel rail link, any advice needed send me a PM.
The best way is to write to all the companys you can find and ask for a job, the big companies are Live nation, Jack morton, Brand and deliver, Robbie Williams productions, Unusall rigging also run events, the Bank and there are loads of smaller outfits out there.
