Second hand Tractors - anyone know anything about them?

Hi

We are in the market for a used tractor to replace the 1955 Massey the family bought new. We don't have a big budget but my investigations so far have raised more questions than answers. We are looking at MF, Ford and Case. Anyone on here know anything and can maybe give some advice?

Well my dad isn't a fan of newer Massey Ferguson's i.e. as in 70's and 80's models, as he says they will do nothing only spin their wheels, hence his nickname for a Massey Ferguson of his acquaintance "Spin-a-lot", which would spin its wheels in a dry field. That said there are quite a few companies making brand new Older style Massey Fergusons, if as it would seem you were happy with the old one.

There are also a load of tractor enthusiast magazine, check out a WH Smith near you, where you will find more tractor magazines than you can shake a stick at, also try the specialist Autotrader magazines or their website www.autotrader.co.uk/PLANT/

Classic Tractor magazine classified might be able to help, a friend has bought 3 Case (IH) 956's from there and have been fine.

If you give more of a rundown, what you need it to do, and how much you have to spend, you may get more useful replies.

I've worked on a few Massey Fergusons while doing my time at Perkins and have always found them to be excellent tractors with great powerplants.

However I am entirely in agreement with the powerplant being excellent and I wasn't even referring to 1990's or 2000's tractors, in fact I was only quoting my old man, who is in a time warp and actually gave an ultimatum to a farmer he did a bit of work for that either the Massey Ferguson tractor went or he went.

The fact that a Massey Ferguson in the style of the tractor in this link: http://eta-mini.kouaa-blog.com/post/8 cost him valuable time & money getting his silage made in 1978, when it got stuck in our meadow might also have something to do with it. His typical quote is "is it any wonder there is no Massey Ferguson factory in Coventry anymore producing tractors like that oul spinalot" Doesn't matter that they updated the range about 5 times since or that previously he has owned grey fergys running on TVO and a 4 cylinder 135 for decades, he isn't very forgiving.

I know a similar person who had a Landini and the axle cracked, now you would think they were made from chocolate speaking to him haha
