Hey all,

I've just bought a DVD-RW drive for my PC and would quite like to make the odd backup of some DVD movies I have - how do I do it?

Before anyone says it, I'm advocating flogging illegal copies for a fiver, I just want to backup a couple.

Cheers

Dave

DVDShrink - easy and free. Do a google search for it, or if you get a problem finding it, PM me.

+1 on DVD shrink, although you may also need DVD decrypter, both available free on-line.

Not unless there's a new version since I got it, I've always done it as a 2-stage process - of course I could be doing it wrong?

A big plus for both DVD Shrink, and Clone DVD.

I love the animated sheep in Clone DVD too!

First use DVD Decrypter on a DVD and copy the decrypted contents to your hard drive. If it totals to more than 4.35GB, use DVD Shrink to resize it so it fits on a single-layer DVDR.

DVD Shrink can decrypt some DVDs, but not all. DVD Decrypter can do 'em all.

Thanks chaps, ill look those out

I tried Nero last night, just on the 'Copy DVD' method - it just said "DVD Copyright Protected" and terminated.

I'll try DVD Clone and DVD Shrink, thanks

This stuff works very well indeed. Of course - if you use the software to circumvent the copy protection systems you are committing an offence. Whilst the studios may or may not take this seriously there are cases of people being fined big money.

Using the software to create copies for sale will be taken very seriously indeed and land anyone doing it in prison.

The driver can be used to "multi-region" a Media Center PC for example....which is fairly legitimate I think. The copying software can be used to back up DVDs of home movies you've made.

Clearly there is NO WAY ANYONE would EVER CONSIDER using the two together at any time to make copies of other stuff. Oh no. That would be illegal.

dvd shrink is great

- download it at www.doom9.org/?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm

does it all in one go these days, but bear in mind that it will compress your standard dual-layer dvd into a single layer, so there is normally a small loss of quality. Not noticeable for most things.

Thanks Don - I genuinely am not looking to make money here, I just want to be able to copy the odd DVD.

Thanks all.

Yup, CLONEDVD + ANYDVD gets my vote - Any DVD allows one to play copy protected audio CDs as well

Can any one help advise me on backing up my bank notes? I've tried a colour photocopier but it wasn't very good quality.

I do it for convenience and to protect the media.

Just easier if they are all in one place.

Also, it allows distributed media so if you want to watch something via a media centre extender etc.

Well clearly there is NO WAY that anyone would even begin to consider using Google to find HACKS that turn the FREE DOWNLOAD TRIAL VERSIONS into the REAL THING! That would be depriving the software authors of their rightful income! And illegal! I am certain no-one reading PH would want to do such a thing and then backup copyrighted and copy-protected content from DVDs they don't own!

The very thought!
