The 'All New HTC One" (aka the M8)

One more observation I think would help my fellow M8 users; I noted that even with wifi turned off, the phone was still showing wifi as active on the power screen. Upon investigating, certain background apps can still access wifi even when it's turned off. This will certainly have an impact on battery life, however small, but thankfully this too can be turned off via Advanced Settings in the wifi menu.
It's lower power than trying to a) locate by GPS and b) more accurate than triangulating with cell towers when you want something location-based. As Google have driven every road, they've made a note of what wifi signals they've passed (they got into trouble for actually sniffing unsecured ones...) and use these to help locate you.I recently switched from Dalvik runtime to ART but obviously still have a couple of apps that don't work properly with ART. It was chucking 'Android Upgrading' splash screens on startup (it shouldn't need to do this having done it once) but I have to say that I couldn't really see a difference in performance; I guess this is because the phone's so fast anyway.
I've gone back to Dalvik for now and the 'upgrading' message on reboot has gone.

I mentioned this a while back, with photos to demonstrate how the metering changed (see the four pics of the garden with the sun over the wall/trees. Changing the focal point of the picture dramatically alters the white balance and exposure. What the M8 seems to struggle with is exposing the whole image properly when presented with both light and dark areas simultaneously - it's using spot metering rather than centre-weighted average metering (I think those are the correct terms from what I've read).

Well just ordered one of these to replace my iPhone 5, have had iPhones from the 3 upwards so will be a big change, lets hope for the better.
There will be a period of adjustment after so long being used to iOS but I think if you stick with it, you'll never look back. It's probably one of the best Android phones you could've chosen, welcome to One M8 ownership!tvrforever said:
How are people getting on memory / storage wise?
I've currently got a Galaxy Nexus 16GB and am constantly dipping below the last 500MB of free space (with all the issues that causes on Android 4.x).
So I'm trying to decide if an M8 16GB + 64GB SDHC card will be ok, or if I should wait for the M8 32GB (with 64GB SDHC) to appear in the UK?

I have no issues with the 16gb+64gb card and I'm a space w

There's not even any news on a 32gb version for the UK. I thought I'd rather wait but it really isn't an issue. I view it as 16gb for phone and apps, 64gb for music and video etc. Besides, with 4G and my data allowance, I'm streaming most stuff now anyway.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned recently is just how good the speakers on the M8 are for playing media. Even if they're no longer BeatsAudio certified (whatever tangible benefit that brings), they're head-and-shoulders above 99% of the rest of the market.
I also took delivery of the BoomBass accessory today, a Bluetooth connected stand-cum-speaker that injects some real bass into the M8's audio output. Playing various youtube song videos, some tunes off my library, and even watching some downloaded films the sound quality is simply outstanding. I'm not normally one for listening to music one my phone, but this is so good it's had me going through hours worth of digital content just because.

Don't get suckered in by the 'Beats Audio' crap; it was just an EQ setting cleverly marketed as a brand to idiots who spent hundreds on sub-par earphones and headphones. Someone with Beats Audio headphones immediately tells me that they know nothing about audio or actually like high-quality audio.

Cheers. Look a little pricey compared to the ebay specials I was using on my One X (which I subsequently ran without a protector with no problems for the 2nd year). I've not noticed anything marring the One M8 but the advantage with this (over the One X) is that the screen is flat to the edge which means you don't get the same lifting issues and clag round the sides.Could you let me know how you get on with yours before I take the plunge?
Bugger, shame when it's so new.
Sorry dude. Almost a shame it wasn't broken and worth putting through insurance.
I've just sold my One X tonight which is great, really nice guy paid the asking (£130) and I put in the Kidigi Car Dock, a couple of gel cases, and a flip case that came from Melhook and a casemate shell case. Oh, and about 6 screen protectors! The phone was mint and I think it was a very fair price. He wasn't very phone literate so I helped him move all his contacts for him to the One X. He then said he doesn't have a laptop so I also moved his pics and music across too!

Just ordered a Spigen case. The gel one that came in the box is looking minging already and was, I suspect, responsible for the loss of a £10 note this afternoon. I think it 'gripped' the note as I pulled the phone out of my pocket.
Anyway, this is the Spigen I went for:

Still toying with the idea of a screen protector again too.
