Headphones let's talk about them
Discussion
Have to say, I couldn't do without my noise cancelling over ear headphones now. Sony WH-1000XM3 - I would definitely buy again.
Use them a lot when travelling for work, and I have found that even having them on in the airport terminal takes most of the noise of the bustle away, and it is far less tiring. On long haul I keep them them on to sleep in. Really good at reducing background noise but it's not totally silent. However if you put earplugs in, then these on top i can only hear my ears ringing Better than the airline's provided noise cancelling headphones in any case.
The price has dropped too... if you are sat on the fence i say go for it!!
I saw on the frivolous purchases thread some Trekz Air bone conduction headphones. I was blown away in the store... but the demo track is synthy and at a frequency that definitely works best. I bought a pair and was initially disappointed... however as time goes on the've really grown on me and now are my go-to for running. A key feature is that the ears are open so you can hear what's about you, the music is good enough quality for while you are running hard, and they're pretty unobtrusive. Mine came with a hard case which is ideal for travelling and throwing in the bag. IPX5 i believe, which has no dust rating, but will tolerate direct jets of water. Definitely sweat proof and they survived in a pretty heavy rain storm that I got caught out in.
If you want to run phone free, with tunes: pair these with a garmin music watch and you're away.

I use the P7's for home mostly connected to an Ibasso dac, also use them when I fly for dac listening and for watching stuff on the tablet and have to say they do isolate a lot of engine noise even though I sit next to the engines.
Not saying I cannot hear the engines however they do tend to eliminate a lot of the noise.
If you are using Android I would highly recommend the full version of the Poweramp Music Player app.
Interesting, thanks. I have nothing to compare them to in terms of isolation so I guess it’s good that you think they perform OK here. I’m listening now and yeah i can hear the TV but once there’s something on it’s not disruptive too much. I’m inclined to think I’ll just stick with the devil I know here. I bought Poweramp ages ago but never used it for years now, worth a revisit? Not saying I cannot hear the engines however they do tend to eliminate a lot of the noise.

I think you are underestimating how effective good noise cancelling is, I think you would find it is a worthwhile improvement. gregs656 said:

Still not ruling it out. If I thought the sound quality would be similar, but that it would also block 90 percent or so of noise then I would be sold; if I were to guess then I’d say the P7’s attenuate down by about 15 - 20 dB (usually reduces the sound by about half, by my perception). I literally don’t have any experience with good ANC as I say. I’ve read plenty of good reviews of the XM3s but also read a few comments saying its very bass heavy and a bit muddy? I like bass, but not if it spoils the mids or make it sound muddy. If its going to be a noticeable downgrade in terms of overall SQ on what I have now then I would be reluctant; be like taking a step forward then one back again, and being poorer in the bargain.
For me it is a balance between sound quality, the environment and utility.
IMO if you are sitting on a noisy train or air craft the intrusiveness of the environment is would be much more detrimental to my enjoyment of the trip and what ever I am listening to than losing a bit of sound quality (if, indeed, you are). That is without discussing the quality of the source...
You should try them, but IMO in store is not that good. Ideally you could borrow a pair. I lent a pair to my Dad a couple of years a go for his flight to Mexico, he didn't think they were doing very much until he took them off!

Anyone else got the Bowers & Wilkins PX? Only bluetooth headphones I have been SERIOUSLY impressed with with all the gubbins turned off.
I have, and I think they are quite good.My preferred route for Bluetooth at the moment is to use a Radsone ES100 adaptor that allows me to use any of my wired headphones without connecting directly to phone or DAP. It's not truly wireless as I still have to physically connect the headphones to the ES100, but does show off how good a sound I can get with Bluetooth still in the chain.

Also had an intermittent fault where the phone would receive volume down signals and the phone would keep muting itself. However don’t know if that’s the very old phone or the headphones .

Sadly I’ve had a bout of terrible luck today in everything I did and that also affected my headphones, coincidentally and somehow the the piece of metal stretching from the headband to the ear cup has popped out and I cant get it back in, which means I can’t wear them. They work still. Any ideas? I am crap at anything physical.

I can't help on the hardware part, but at least it looks like two separate pieces rather than a physical break. It might be worth seeing if there is a dedicated forum as I can't imagine you are the first person this has happened to.Also had an intermittent fault where the phone would receive volume down signals and the phone would keep muting itself. On the intermittent problems, are you sure you are on the latest firmware? I had load of similar problems with mine until they fixed it all in firmware. I haven't used them for a while now though, so more problems might have crept in.
I've recently bought the B&O H9i and admittedly I was drawn in initially by the looks. The do look fantastic.
The sound quality to me, is superb, but I don't think they are quite loud enough. I never run them at full blast but found myself slightly disappointed when I tried it.
The ANC is pretty good. Not sure it's quite as good as my mates Bose ones, but the sound quality is better. I think with ANC only, the Bose wins, but with music on at the same time, the H9i were better.
I really like the control panel on the right can, and the stop/start when taking them off and putting them back on

Quoted £95-160 for repairs..... £0 under warranty but purchased under eBay. Any ideas? Contact the seller to ask if he has the receipt ?On the intermittent problems, are you sure you are on the latest firmware? Definitely try that first before paying that much out for a repair.gregs656 said:
It's difficult to tell if it's broken or just come un glued?
I feel like if they won't repair under warranty then epoxy if it's unglued or a plastic welding kit if they're broken would fix it.
Its a solid piece of metal, they have already said they would fix it but it will be charged £95.00 for repairs or £160.00 to replace themI feel like if they won't repair under warranty then epoxy if it's unglued or a plastic welding kit if they're broken would fix it.
