Read some of what you wrote and agree re marketing apple are incredibly good at it and i think nokia have learnt something from them after the release of the iphone4 which went so pete tong.
Only thing i can think of as to why its taking them so long to launch the N8 is a vain hope they are making certain it will not have any of the same issues that they have had with most of their other phones.
Launch it country by country so as to do damage limitation if there are any issues unlike with apple and their global launch.
Nonetheless i am starting to get a bit antsy now as there are tons of rumours and pre orders are being taken on nokia italy but nowhere else.
I WANT MY N8!!!!
I too am wanting the N8, and am slightly thankful that they're finally appearing to be wanting to get it right first time, rather than beta testing on the public.Only thing i can think of as to why its taking them so long to launch the N8 is a vain hope they are making certain it will not have any of the same issues that they have had with most of their other phones.

It'll also hopefully be ready for the market by the time I'm due an upgrade - november, so with luck it'll be an N8 for me birthday.
The 5800 was a joke on release, but they finally got it right. The 5230 was a surprise - rock solid on its initial firmware.
Not sure the iPhone 4 went all Pete Tong though, its a good product, albeit with some inconsistencies with the antenna.

...I don't think the Nokia N8 will be that great, unfortunately. Initial reviews from other parts of the world are not good and Nokia are not using Android for it. Poor battery life apparently and the software/GUI not up to much. Real shame as I had been waiting for it too before I got my iPhone 4.

You've not been reading the same reviews as I have then. Its looking pretty good overall, just let down by having the standard S^1 theme. Which can easily be changed.Android will not be used by Nokia, at least not for the forseeable future.
GUI looks absolutely fine, just a refinement of the current S^1 UI to bring consistency.
Only one bad review so far, and that was from Eldar @ Mobilereview, and that was a very early prototype.

Reviews from other parts of the world??? The phone isnt yet on the market and hasnt been used by anyone long enough to establish battery life etc so anyone giving it a bad review is being a bit thick imho.
Once launched and used for a week or two by a mobile reviewer then they are welcome to comment/slag off its failings but see no point beforehand.
I have read and watched numerous reviews on youtube etc and all were good.
The problem with the N8 won't be with the hardware or software.
It'll be that about five minutes after it's released, Nokia will pretend that it doesn't exist.
Ask N900 owners about that sort of thing.
And not putting Maemo on it speaks volumes, I think, about Nokia's commitment to platforms other than Symbian.

The iPhone wants me to like it but Apple's bad attitude puts me off, the same for the iPad too. I prefer the way Android lets me rearrange my screen. I prefer the use of widgets. I've already invested in Android with my G1 and all the apps will work on a new phone, plus I want to use things that are verboten on iOS, so it is no contest.
I've used Symbian before I went to Android. I tried one of the new Nokia smartphones but it was still clunky in all the wrong places, and the ovi store is totally useless, albeit slightly better than "Download!" which is what the software market on Symbian was called before.

Interesting reading some views on this topic. I myself am a 3G user and very casual, hate itunes purely as it rapes all of my PC's resources and slows things down to a crawl. But for brainless usability its great.
The 3G phone however is not. I've had mine 2 years and noticed the battery getting progressively weaker (2+ full charges required daily) and the speed to load/run simple apps is now sloth like.
I've updated to all the latest OS and its made things even worse.
Basically I'm going off Apple pretty quick.
Another thing to consider here in yankee land is that AT&T are the sole carriers of the Iphones and IPAD 3G services. The network is overwhelmed. I've had more dropped calls and web pages crash than I've had hot meals so much so I'm strongly considering a Motorola Droid 2 or Droid X.
I don't know if either of those phones are available to most PH'ers but any real world advice/experience would be appreciated.

... I have a Milestone (aka Droid) and I love it, had it at about the same time friends got a 3GS, paid considerably less and it's about 5x the device the 3GS was (also in feel, built quality).Another thing to consider here in yankee land is that AT&T are the sole carriers of the Iphones and IPAD 3G services. So if the Milestone is anything to go by, I'd have a Droid 2 in a heartbeat.

Nokia have been offering surprising levels of support for some of the previous models over the years. Recently we've had the 5230, 5800, 5530 and X6 getting a good range of firmware updates. It'll be that about five minutes after it's released, Nokia will pretend that it doesn't exist.

The N8 is a *very* high profile product for Nokia, and I think they've learnt at least some of the mistakes from previous years, and its looking like being a more solid product than they've released for a good few years.
The N900 is a strange one - I get a feeling that there may be a variant of Meego running on it semi-officially at some point, and its probably being used as one of the test mules for the OS.
