Not really. In the same way I’d never buy a titanium watch, I like a bit of weight. Obviously not excessive.

Because...?

A lot of people say 'more premium' but I've never really been sure what that actually means and nobody ever seems to be able to substantiate it. Whatever the flagship from whatever the manufacturer, they're all pretty much the same recipe of glass and steel/aluminium and they're all manufactured for perfect fit and finish. The iPhone X and the Plus models may weigh more than the competition but, as Apple keep telling us, lighter is better.

If I had to guess, I'd go with 'more premium' being entirely in the mind of the buyer. I'm sure there are Galaxy owners who believe their devices are 'more premium' and have bought into it, just as their are Apple device owners who think likewise. I just don't think it's a real thing.
I agree completely. Said colleague with the Samsung loves it and that’s great.

When you’re spending £1149 on a phone it is a lot about how you feel about it. Is it worth it to you. I’ll be honest, I didn’t use half of the stuff the 6s+ used to do, so I don’t need huge leaps in technology, I just want to feel that I have something nice / flashy / shiny in my pocket for my money as I’m a materialistic dick. laugh

The old 4/4S model had a lot of heft to them while being very small, it's a big part of what made them feel "premium".
In comparison:
The 4S @3.5" (remember the days biggrin): 140g
The S2 @4.3" (big back then!): 116g

I had both devices and preffered the Samsung in nearly every way, but the 4S felt a lot more solid (until it met another solid object that is).

I loved the size of the 4. It fitted into my buttoned shirt pockets which kept it safe from pickpockets.

Taking the Apple Watch as an example - the sport model and SS model do exactly the same thing. The latter is substantially more expensive and holds its value no better. But, the stainless steel construction, sapphire crystal screen and ceramic back make it a more premium product. I can dress the SS model down, but it’s much harder to dress the sport model up.

It may, or may not be important to you.

That's a vertical shift, which is fine as the two products use different materials. I'm talking about horizontal shifts and what makes an Apple product more premium than any other flagship.

Fair enough.

I’ve never compared the Samsung so it might feel amazing. I’m iOS because it suits my family to all be on the same platform.

I think it probably simply comes down to your individual tastes. I happen to like white/stainless steel and glass as materials. I don’t particularly like grey/black. This is a general thing and in no way any comment on other phone manufacturers.

I see this as a Audi vs Skoda debate to be honest. I’ve played with the newest Samsung and thought it felt cheap compared to my 6S+.

That's ok, it's available in blue as well.

The daft thing is 99% of people spend 99% of time on their phone in an app, not messing around in the menus.
So user experience on android/apple is 99% the same given 99% of people will be using the same 5 apps.

The OS differences are really small, and not encountered all that often.

In reality the big differences are size, weight, charge and unlocking. Not really anything to do with the operating system.

I disagree, I probably spend at least as much of my time switching between the apps so the ease and intuitiveness of that is very important (to me). Also the platform will in some (admittedly few) cases define what the app is able to do, and that can be important.

Ok, you did say 99% and not 100%, but for my personal use I'd say a lot (30-40%) of the interaction I have with my phone is affected by what OS it has.

Sorry I have not read the whole thread but has the repair cost been brought up yet?

I just read that if you were to break both bits of glass, ( not very likely I suppose?) you could be looking at an £800 repair bill!!

I guess that is what insurance Is for, but...wow!!

Edited for a typo.

He accidentally ordered an 8? hehe
You got me worried there, had to check. It is indeed 256, that’s a rediculous size but the 64 isn’t big enough.

It's almost like they're strongly encouraging people into the more expensive version.

Well I picked up one from eBay for £970. Yes £970! 1 day sale and pick up only. No one bid. So much for these things selling for a premium.

Gotta say I’m impressed so far. Face ID worked every time (and is much quicker than finger unlock) and the screen just feels smoother than previous ones (I mean to touch) maybe there’s a new coating on it which will wear off.

Like the full screen and the lack of home button hasn’t bothered me one bit. The swipe up is just the same.

The one negative is that you can’t unlock it with just the Face ID. You need to swipe up after you’ve unlocked it. It’s so you can access the control centre thing but still. Would be nice if they gave me the option. Maybe a next release function.

The feel is very premium. The bezel reminds me of the original iPhone in stainless steel. This might scratch if the original one is anything to go by. The glass back feels quality.

I’m amazed how it’s only just a bit bigger than my old 6 but yet the screen is bigger than a plus!

Yep I’m an Apple fanboy. But so what. I have a samsung S8 with work and I hate every moment of using it. It’s now on divert to the X. If only I could forward texts!

ETA - the lack of battery percentage is a bit annoying!

If you pick the phone up and swipe up - it unlocks and goes straight to the home screen. There's a sort of 'mid' screen saying 'FaceID' (hard to explain) but try it. Works for me

The battery percentage can be seen by pulling down the control centre. Yes, not there immediately, but visible fairly easily.
