The last point is that VR may have never really caught on, like 3D TV's, but once you get someone like Apple pushing it, and working with major games and movie studios to produce content specifically for this sort of device, that will surely be good for all VR systems.
You've never heard of Oculus / Quest / Valve Index / PS VR / etc? There are something like 20 million Quest headsets out there. Those devices are also far better for gaming than the Vision Pro (which isn't really a gaming device)
20 million or whatever might sound a lot, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to console numbers, never mind PCs, never mind smartphones. Plus, most of that number will be languishing in drawers if people I know with them are any guide. Many of the older ones are effectively or explicitly obsolete too.

They are niche products and I don't think this Apple thing is going to change that, especially at that price point. Nobody wants to wear a stupid big pair of goggles for more than an hour or two, and then only doing something very specific like gaming.

Was wondering if the M3 chip was going to be announced earlier this week, guess the M2 hasn't yet been out for long enough yet so likely will appear nearer the end of the year?

Noticed that Apple have listed quite a few M1/M2 refurbs on their site noticeably with the larger memory/storage options as well rather than the base spec likely they usually have with the refurbs.

ETA: stuff doesn't stay on the apple refurb site long does it. They had 8 core/8core 16/512 M2 airs on there earlier. Now it's just 8/512s or there's a 16/1TB for Megabucks.

They can come and go pretty quickly, I found that sometimes things were on the site and off again within the day. When the Mac Mini M2 models came up I grabbed one quick hehe
Oouf waiting it out paid off. Eventually a 13 inch M2 in blue with 8 core cpu, 8 core gpu and 16/512 configuration popped up. And this time at about £1300 thanks to them dropping the 13 inch prices with the introduction of the 15.

It's a lovely machine I have to say and the battery life is stunning. I can't believe you can have this kind of performance. Absolute silence and you don't need to worry about finding an outlet.

Apple aren't actually pushing it as a traditional VR headset though - they are positioning it as a new way to interact with computers/the virtual world and they may have a winner on their hands there.

Basically, it's what Meta were trying to do with the Quest Pro except it actually does deliver whereas the Quest Pro just left people scratching their heads at the $1499 launch price for something that on the face of it wasn't all that much better than a $399 Quest 2. Of course, the Apple price is even more extortionate but that's because they appear to have built it with a 'money no object' approach. I'm sure that the tech will get cheaper and filter down as will the interface concept which is superb by all accounts. It will almost certainly be copied by anyone who wants to make a serious VR headset. They also don't need absolutely every bit of tech to be included on cheaper headsets - the cool front OLED for projecting the user's eyes springs to mind.

basically check the refurb store daily and wait for one to pop up.

There are some proper weird setups appearing on there sometimes..... like 2TB storage and 8GB of ram. Or the other way round with barely any storage and maximum ram. You do often get the 10 core GPU versions which are another £100 over the 8 core ones. Its really not worth it mind you so I'd hang on for a 8 core one!

Seems we are now being charged more in £ than the US is in $.
...and it used to be cheaper to import stuff from the US when it was £1.70 to $1.00 (about 10 years ago) even with VAT/duty/fees and it even broke the $2 mark in 2007. But at the current £1.00 to $1.25 means everything imported from the US much more expensive (it almost hit parity at one point last year).

I did notice the smug lady wearing a set on the plane...but obviously bankrupted herself buying them as she could only now afford economy seats biggrin

But if you use 'man maths' and break it down to the the equipment it will be able to replace (i.e. multiple Apple Pro Display XDR @ £4599 each, and a base Mac Studio Max @ £2099) then it's almost a bargain wink
There was a woman on your plane wearing a Vision Pro? They aren't even out until next year! Even Marques Brownlee hasn't been given a set to take away.

They aren't designed for consumers though, they are for early adopters and devs. By the time we get to Vision Pro 5 they will be absolutely everywhere, just like AirPods (which everyone said they would never wear)

The woman was wearing them on a plane during the Apple presentation...not IRL.

This is my latest MacBook Matrix... Obviously I'm sure the measures I've chosen won't have the same weighting for everyone, but for me this shows that the M2 16 / 512gb is the clear winner. Benchmarks are taken from review sites mostly, apart from the M1 Air, which are from my own machine.

The context is that my base spec M1 Air is still demolishing everything I throw at it, so an upgrade isn't on the cards. I can only imagine how capable the Pros must be!

Not sure if this has been addressed already but is anyone running Windows on their M1 or M2? If so how is it going?

I've got a 2013 Macbook Air which has been fantastic (so far, touch wood!), and I'm running a Bootcamp partition. In fact, I only used it for Windows now due to being married into the Microsoft stack. I have to get a new laptop at some point and thinking of whether its worth upping to an M1.
Just to note, I run the laptop with an external Windows keyboard and two monitors (laptop rarely used in isolation away from desk).

Sounds like you need a Windows laptop if your 'stack' is mostly Microsoft?

I have an M2 Air and use Parallels for occasional Windows stuff. Works brilliantly.

Don't forget that you need to install Windows for ARM and then it translates x86 Windows apps to ARM and then runs Parallels via translation so you'll take a hit if it is particularly CPU or GPU intensive.

Thanks guys.. I will probably take a look at a Windows laptop then, or look into the Parallels.

I'm not an Apple fanboy at all, but the fact that the Macbook Air has lasted 10 years and hasn't really slowed down with viruses is remarkable, all Windows laptops I've used in comparison barely last 3 years... was thinking the M1 chip would probably be stonking for Windows!

This is why some people are 'fanboys'.

My first Mac Mini did me for ten years and I only replaced it with an M1 because I wanted to open a nice new box. I have an iPad Pro that's been on stage with me for 200 gigs per year for seven years. Sure, Apple stuff is expensive but for me, it's a total no-brainer.

My 'portable' work PC is a 2019 21.5" 4k iMac (i7-8700, 32GB DDR4, 1TB SSD, Radeon Pro 560X).

It dual boots MacOS/W11, but it spends most of its time in Windows.

It's only 4 years old, so still runs great...even used to play some games on it - which ran much better under Windows than MacOS of course, but not at the native 4k.

Not been used much recently due to working from home and being supplied a work laptop (HP Z-Book G9), having a Mac Studio, and a proper gaming PC.

You also need to bear in mind that Boot Camp will not run on M1/M2, only runs on Intel

I think part of the benefit of the Apple Silicon is that the operating systems have been written/optimised for it.

So my 15' 2013 MacBook Pro Retina finally struggled so time for an upgrade luckily I've got the lend of a new base spec 15' MacBook Air M2 and also a year old 16' MacBook Pro M1 Pro with 16GB Ram to compare and contrast for a week

It will back my secondary machine as I have a 24' 4.5K iMac, I like the thinnest of the Air but after a day I just can't overlook the XDR display on the Pro.

The M1 Pro with more cores is ever so slightly faster than the M2 Air but it's not laggy by any means.
