My Pixel 5/Spotify works as you describe above, from the drop down menu spotify sits in there paused or if I open the app it has the last track it was playing at the bottom.
OK thanks, I guess yours doesn't automatically resume on connection to a Bluetooth audio device like car stereo, speaker etc.?8bit said:
So one thing I've noticed since I switched to the Pixel (4a), previously when I got in my car and the phone connected via bluetooth, Spotify would automatically resume playing from where it left off, generally unless it hadn't been used for a good number of hours. Now it generally doesn't, unless I'd just stopped and jumped out, then right back in the car, and sometimes not even then. Not sure if that's a Spotify thing, a thing with the phone itself or an Android 12 thing? Had a play with stuff like battery optimisation for the Spotify app etc., nothing seems to help. Not seeing anything in Spotify settings which looks like it would help either, any ideas?
My Pixel 3 XL (Android 12) does as you describe how yours used to work. It picks up playing automatically when I get back in the car.(side complaint that Spotify is only supported via bluetooth rather than through the Spotify app on my 2017 BMW. My son's iPhone shows artwork and has more in-car controls compared to Android. Spotify dopped the functionality for some reason a while back)
8bit, my old 2XL used to do what you describe, picking up whatever music I'd been playing even some days previously when I jump in the car and press the Play button on the bluetooth dongle thing. Android 12 doesn't do this, even with YouTube Music, so it's not a Spotify thing - I suspect it's Android 12 or the Pixel 6.
Android 12 on my P6 does feel like a backwards step compared with the polished, settled UX on my P2, and I can see why people are disgruntled about it all. But I do have faith that Google will sort it all out given a month or three, and the P6 will be just as reliable as my 2 was/is.

OK thanks all for that. Had also wondered if it was to do with the primitive Bluetooth solution in my car (2009 Jag XKR with the iPod connectivity option and a BoVee Bluetooth receiver) but it sounds like Android Auto-equipped cars don't seem any better in this regard. No chance of using this as a (admittedly very flimsy) excuse to get a new car then

What are those with Pixel 3s doing now it has received its last update? I probably going to keep mine for a good while yet (touch wood).
I wondered that too. Have just lost the free Google storage on my 3 XL, now I've learned it's not getting updates. Not sure how worried I should be as obviously apps will still update so assume I'm not suddenly vulnerable.
(side note that my system shows Android Security Update: 5 October 2021 and "up to date". Shouldn't there be a more recent update?)
I think I've pretty much talked myself into a Pixel 6 Pro. My last Pixel was the 4XL which was great, until it got ran over by a forklift.
For the past 18 months I've been using a Oneplus 8T that I got a great deal on from John Lewis. This has been a super phone, and the only reason I'm considering the upgrade is that the 8T's camera isn't as good as the one I had one my last Pixel.
The tradeoff for me is slow charging (the 8T is about 40 mins from empty to full, which is great, and I haven't seen any decline in battery performance in the time I've had it), and also it seems like getting a good screen protector could be an issue.
What's everyone else doing with screen protectors?

Phone lives in jacket pocket with ID lanyard and so far is fine
I've had it since launch
Charge mine with dumb charger overnight and battery usually lasts all day long, believe fast charging *may* be bad for batteries so am happy with this. Did have a OnePlus 8 which had crazy fast charge cycles as you say which like yours was comprehensively destroyed

Am with the Mrs' French family this week. Can confirm the translation of spoken french is absolute bks. I don't think it's better than on my old Samsung.
On a real life situation sat round the table with the phone transcribing it's terrible.
Even if they slow down, enunciate clearly and stop swearing it's not very good.

Why not just have a cheap and cheerful wireless charging pad on your bedside cabinet? There are benefits of charging overnight where the speed doesn't matter. The phone detects when you put it on charge at bedtime and automatically enables 'do not disturb' mode. It also does adaptive charging so it charges to 100% before your alarm, in a way to prolong battery life. Additionally if you use wireless, you aren't putting any wear and tear on the port. The ports always seem to start playing up after 3-4 years.

Doesn't have to be wireless charging for that. My Pixel 4a does the night-time charging thing when plugged in. Wireless charging also uses around 40% more energy to charge a phone from empty to full too. There are benefits of charging overnight where the speed doesn't matter.
