Are they just nice-to-have ? Well, you can say that about almost anything really.

I could attempt to glue it, but it won't last 8 hours a day of me fidgeting.
I don't trust the chair now though! Hesitant to move on it.
ETA: Ah man it keeps making noises. Did it do it before? What if I'm fatter than before? Will it drop? Will I die?

I've opted to buy one of those horrible clear carpet protectors for now.. Until I figure out what to do.
Trying to place an order for my Ikea desk has been a nightmare. I even when to a store where it said it had 2 in stock, to find none there. Wasted trip.
Anyway, after 3 weeks of trying to place the order online, for delivery, it finally allowed me! Result, booked in for 12th November (today for the slow of thinking

I had a similar experience buying some PPE a few weeks back. Yes sir, you can "click and collect". Get to the shop. No, none in stock. Come back on Tuesday. On Tuesday I'll be locked down back in Wales. Reorder for delivery. Driver can't find house and didn't ring. Second attempt, natty web app shows driver's van a few miles from us. Then he stops moving for a few hours. Finally get a text to say he's slid off someone's driveway and is stuck. Next day they finally deliver.
‘Hacked’ my Ikea desk a bit today. I knew the monitor stand wouldn’t go in the edge due to the back board and I didn’t want to drill a hole in the top, so had to make some cuts.
This piece was all the way across, took 100mm out, then screwed the bottom into the cable tray below. Keeps it tidy.
Then, I wanted a shelf for my laptop, previously it just sat on the desktop. Annoyingly the predrilled holes didn’t go high enough, so I had to make my own, laser level coming in handy again! Wood drill bits have a point, I didn’t want to go all the way through, so swapped to a all purpose bit once I’d made a pilot.
In this snap, you can see the cut out I had to make on the back bored for cables. I then had to enlargen it, so some cables went below the shelf level. To the right is the cut out for the monitor arm
Ultimately it’s a throw away desk, once lock down is over. But I’m happy with it for now. Only down side is the mouse doesn’t work on the surface! Going to have to get a pad
Next is to make the draw a charging draw. Basically just fed cables through so stuff can charge out of the way. Best order some longer cables

I admire your attention to detail - I've always just put a bit of coloured tape on the drill bit as a marker to avoid going through.

Never really gets worked. But I think a few holes in the backboard wouldn’t be the worst idea.
We’ll call that phase 2
Give that machine some ventilation, it's a not-so silent killer of computers, even if they aren't stressed that much.
Get something like this, a lot more convenient:
