Samsung Galaxy S II

Love it!
Apart from the Bluetooth not being permanently visible which makes docking with car stereo non-automatic, it does everything well...
Usually it should be the other way around:Apart from the Bluetooth not being permanently visible which makes docking with car stereo non-automatic, it does everything well...
- Bluetooth is on but not visible
- Phone is once paired with car stereo
- Phone sees stereo but stereo doesn't see phone
- Phone connects (does the pairing) with the stereo

Don't like the fact that you cant plug it into the PC without it becoming a non-phone, and I haven't tried Kies yet (as it is sooooo slow on my 10yo laptop using USB 1.0), but calls quality is great, gps locks on quickly and stays locked, bluetooth audio is smooth and clear.
Very impressed!
How do you mean a non-phone? Is this down to the Samsung interface? When I plug in my phone I get a little menu:Very impressed!
The one marked is the last one I chose, and I can pic this menu from the notification bar.
After starting this topic half a year ago, I thought that I should update.
Tuesday I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II, this makes my smartphone lineup like this:
The effortlessness of multitasking and just generally everything is amazing.
One small example: when starting up the phone, after entering my account the phone started downloading the apps I used on the Milestone (over wifi). Now, usually when I did an "update all" on the milestone and it did like 8 or more apps at the same time, the phone couldn't be used for about a minute or two (downloading and installing everything).
Now, it downloaded and installed over 20 apps (some of them quite large) in seconds! If it didn't give me the notifications in the notification bar, I wouldn't even have noticed.
Anyway, I always loved my milestone and it's flexibility, but to keep it "speedy" I needed to do things like limit the use of widgets, using a task manager and the like. But all this is redundant on the SGS2, it really flies.
Playing HD MKV's directly from my NAS without a problem, playing flash movies from any site (not just youtube,...) and all of this instantly.
So, I'm probably still in the honeymoon stage, but for now it was really worth the upgrade.
I'll keep you posted if it fades
Edit:
Forgot to add: the screen size.
It's really big, but just manageable with the thumb on the hand you hold it because it's so thin.
I am pleased with how they managed the extra space a screen like this gives, and it's great what they did, essentially add an extra line of icons in the bottom:
That shows:
Phone, Contacts, Messages and Apps.
So 4 things you'd often use.
The dailer is great (works a lot like the "dailer one" app, which is thus now redundant), but does anybody know if I can change the "message" app? Or any of the icons for that matter?

Change the message app? Sure download go SMS or handcent or chomp SMS.
To edit the icons go into the app drawer, press menu and edit. You'll be able to add or remove icons from the dock now. Although I use go launcher ex as I find it far superior in every way.
Indeed, app drawer, then "edit", didn't see you could alter the dock To edit the icons go into the app drawer, press menu and edit. You'll be able to add or remove icons from the dock now. Although I use go launcher ex as I find it far superior in every way.
Thanks a million!

also it's a samsung, great on paper, but rubbish to own!
Just to come back on this: Have one for a couple of months now, by far the best phone I've ever owned. Battery life 2x as good as my iPhone and Milestone, incredibly fast and some great features.

On another note:
Google announced Nexus S will get ICS (4.0) shortly.
The nexus S is near identical to the Galaxy S, so the SGS and SGS2 should follow shortly (hopefully).
Google also stated that it should be possible to get ICS on every Gingerbread device. Now wait for the manufacturers to make that true...

Zespak I love the galaxy s2 as well clearly my favourite phone, but if you think the battery life is better than the iphone then your iphone was broken tbh. The s2 is good at many things but battery life ain't really one of them !
Sorry for the misunderstanding, my iphone was getting a bit older when I got rid of it. I've got to say that the sgs is a bit more inconsistent, but I don't have to charge it by the end of the day, which I had to with the milestone and the iphone.Agreed on the sat nav part. I use the satnav in two different ways; in the convertible only the screen and on the bike just the sound through the headphones. The difference is night and day of course, last week I rode the bike for over 2,5 hours with satnav, and had enough juice to make it through the day (just). Miles (pun intended) better than both the milestone and the 3g I had.

Lets be honest, there was never any way that the Nexus was ever going to be a worthwhile upgrade over the SGS2. It shows how good the SGS2 is though, considering its 6 months old now, its still to be bettered in real terms.
What I want now though is a vanilla ICS ROM for the SGS2
they basically did the same thing Apple did with the 4S, enough to persuade older handset users to upgrade, without pissing off the ones that have just bought the sgs2/ip4.What I want now though is a vanilla ICS ROM for the SGS2
It's not a game-changer, but it still is a very decent step forward, I'm glad they are still moving forward at this pace, and we know that the thing doing this is the competition, we should all embrace this as it may not last...

I'm really really tempted to take out the £23 a month orange contract and ditch all my devices and just have the S2 instead. Is it a good idea? How does the phone handle being used for a bit of everything. (I would probably get the extended battery for it.)
What do you mean, "everything"? The big screen goes a long way, but it's not a 10" tablet. I use mine for a lot of surfing (right now), watching videos from the nas/internet, some gaming and of course for mail/calling.LukeSi said:

Not replacing my computer, but replacing my iPod, current Phone, camera, and camcorder (a portable one)Oh add to that the GPS unit btw

There is a known bug with some drivers causing the AndroidOS process to drain the battery. It affects some users and doesn't seem to affect others.
As for updating too often - I only had it checking my email through exchange (push) as I did on my iphone...the iphone easily lasted a day and a half, this phone only lasted 1/2 to 3/4 of a day.
There's something wrong with yours or some other process running. As for updating too often - I only had it checking my email through exchange (push) as I did on my iphone...the iphone easily lasted a day and a half, this phone only lasted 1/2 to 3/4 of a day.
I have a gmail account and an exchange account, both over 30 mails/day, both on push, and easily have 40% battery left when coming home.
Push email seems to have no effect on my battery life. The screen and gps however...
