Got to admit, I've not used HPUX before and although it looks horrible, the scripting features are tremendously powerful.

Microsoft, take note!

Having used both (and most other forms of UNIX), and using a rather sweeping statement. i would say that UNIX scripting whilst different, is in most not as good as it is in windows, true some things like send mail etc are there to use as standard, but i would say in the situation you have described you have been denied access to ALL but the most basic scripting on windows, Batch files after all came from DOS and have not kept pace with the O/S changes. the windows scripting Host is VERY powerful and some of the things you can do are mind-blowing.

and before anyone flames that, this is not a UNIX slate, or a I love MS, its just that they are different animals, and should always be treated and used as such... one thing i have found in the past though, is that UNIX platforms tend to be more stable etc, the reason for this could simply be that people "PLAY" less with a UNIX box, and are not forever installing the latest shareware, cover CD or latest utility, only to uninstall it 10 seconds later.
It comes under, "if it ain't broke.. don't fix it" and "if you fiddle with something long enough, it will eventually break"

Anyhow.. glad you got the problem licked, in such an elegant way.
