Phoned O2 and I've got to email them my port code - meanwhile continue with new number. Got through activation (barstewards wanted a credit card deposit thanks to their credit check - might have to investigate my credit rating...) and I'm happily doing the initial sync.....
how much did they want for the deposit??I'm fortunate to have an excellent credit score (I check often via Experian due to my business) and mine sailed through, including the transfer of my current O2 number. My fiancee had to pay the £100 deposit even though all direct debits were coming out of my account. Both phones registered by 7pm last night.
Aside from the blip with CPW everything has gone very smoothly

So, is it a blokes gadget or could it be a woman's phone? Are they worth getting?
Ladies do love them, so I guess it's the first proper crossover gadget that appeals to both sexes....As to whether it's a bloke's gadget, it's a full-on unix machine underneath the fancy exterior. Whether that spins your wheel or not is your call. It does mine, and I think it's damn good fun to hack about with
Get the 'toy' for christmas day and the port over her number with a PAC later.
Anyone know what the availability will be like? Short on supply or readily available?

I can not understand the seemingly panic buying of thes things
Agreed. Had one a few months back. It's in a drawer somewhere I guess. Nice interface, don't get me wrong, but doesn't do a lot of things that I want.Release a version with a modern radio chipset and a more open OS and I'm suddenly very interested.

Give me a shout if you need help hacking it.
T-Mobile and Orange work out of the box, Vodafone needs a bit of tweaking, but I've done them all (mine was 100% usable on 12th Sept)
I'd love a bit of assistance. I bought one from CPW last night and I've got an internet connection a USB cable with an XP laptop and a Vodafone SIM ready to rock n roll. Just a bit confused as to what I do next.T-Mobile and Orange work out of the box, Vodafone needs a bit of tweaking, but I've done them all (mine was 100% usable on 12th Sept)
All help appreciated.
Edited:
Actually according to reports at http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/09/iphone-testing-the-... then you need to downgrade to 1.1.1 from 1.1.2 and then apply the jailbreak. As I'm not a mac expert I may wait until a one click solution is released. Hopefully later this weekend.
2nd Edit:
Ahh bugger it. I'm using the instructions at http://www.unlockthatiphone.com/ and doing the downgrade. I may come unstuck later.....

I think I've been quite lucky - I only waited 10 minutes as I dropped into a small, local o2 store at 6 last night, and ended up fifth in the queue of ten. No issues with activation, which went through prettty much instantaneously, although it took a few hours for non-wifi data and visual voicemail to get working (network propagation I assume). That was converting an existing o2 contract to iPhone.
I'm overall pretty impressed, athough I'd like to see more PDA-like functionality, such as synced ToDos with iCal, voice notes and third party applications. Hopefully the SDK release in February will help in this regard. Also, some more on-board memory would be welcome.

Okay, it would appear that anysim 1.2 is not working for the UK iPhone yet with the latest baseband. ope they release an update over the weekend....
Not been about when you posted, sorry...Interesting about anySIM 1.2 - I wasn't aware that 1.2 had been released... have you tried the patched 1.1 anySIM from the Elite Dev team?
Also it may be worth trying iPhoneSimFree.
Could you do me a favour and go to the Settings / General / About and post up the Modem Firmware version?
Erica's claiming (of TUAW fame) that she hasn't found an app that ran on 1.1.1 that doesn't run on 1.1.2 so far.

My modem firmware is 04.02.13_G which is supposedly supported by anySIM 1.2 but it fails with a script error which a quick google suggests is the same experiance as others...
It looks like the dev team are aware that the bootloader on the uk version has been tweaked, hoping for a fix soon.

The 1.1.2 firmware is available as a download update to existing phones.
If the UK phones have nominally 1.1.2 firmware but a different bootloader than old phones updated to 1.1.2, then Apple are being *very* sneaky indeed.
The reason I'm concerned about this is that IPSF uses an RSA flaw in the bootloader to do its job, and if you've ever run IPSF then the token in the seczone gets zeroed out. I've been told that this isn't a problem until Apple update the bootloader, at which point you'll have lost your unique token and the phone will be bricked - and furthermore, there is no way to recover that unique token.
If the bootloader has patched the flaw, then IPSF won't work but also I'll have to avoid updating to 1.1.2, unless the upgrade is different to the UK phones (????) It'd also nail the conspiracy theory that IPSF *are* Apple in disguise, so they can have their exclusive deals with carriers for lots of money but also keep the hackers happy without obviously breaking the terms of their contracts with the carriers....
anySIM does a bunch of things in the script but to diagnose the problem you'd have to see the output of the CLI tools they use... it doesn't seem to redirect stdout to a file so you can see what's been done though. I've checked my anySIM 1.1/patch directory that I used to unlock 1.1.1 and there are no log files. Have you got a log of where the script failed? (long shot)
-- just did some more checking and people are saying that the bootloader IS different on UK phones. Not only are they overpriced but if the bootloader is new then IPSF could destroy the phone, and anySIM isn't working. Sneaky.

Arse. I just bought one from the local O2 shop specifically to unlock and use on Voda. Looks like I won't be doing it for a few days then...PJLarge said:

Looks like I won't be doing it for a few days then...Apparently not all UK phones have the new bootloader either... if you have hacker inclinations then jailbreak it, install the BSD tools, install minicom and the minirc.dfl file to access the baseband modem, and issue AT+XGENDATA to the modem.
If the Bootloader comes back with 03.09_M3S2 then you can use anySIM 1.2 and it will unlock successfully.
If the bootloader is 04.06_M3S2 then it's the sneaky new UK bootloader and anySIM won't work (yet).
ok, bought and activated without a hitch. Ok it wasn't that simple with a small problem with r
the activation failing a couple of times. All seemed to go pretty well though. So far impressed with it but the predictive text is crap. Currently typing this message on it. Only problem is that it is not my phone, its the wife's. Still she is very pleased so I am in the serious good books now.
