Dont get your RAM upgrade from Apple. . . Goto Crucial or someone similar lots cheaper
That's not always as sensible as it sounds these days. Apple normally fill both memory slots in the laptops and the upgrade will require you to throw both modules away. It used to be that you could specify a single module on the order and leave a slot free for upgrading with Crucial but I haven't seen that option for a while now.

How much cheaper? would apple invalidate the warranty if I added my own memory, or are they not as bad as that?

I could get a nice big 1TB external HDD with the change I saved from getting the white one scratchchin
Upgrade to 2x2GB is either £120 or £180 from Apple, £61.09 plus delivery from Crucial.

RAM and hard disk are quite easy to change and allowed under the warranty, although obviously if you somehow manage to damage anything in the process you'd have to pay for it.

eek

That's a big jump! I think I'll be buying the memory from crucial, that's if I think I'll need it, I'll try the macbook at first, if its struggling then I'll get the memory.

Ok, so new query, when the last week of the older models are being phased out, do you think it would be possible to bet a macbook pro for under the magic 1K mark??

I quite fancy the 2-touch trackpad, would be like my iPhone then. smile

I think that type of trackpad is only on the MB Air. However I expect the new MB range will have them.

Just been on the apple website, the MBP does have it too.

I stand corrected, the newer MBP does have the newer trackpad.

Two finger trackpad? What exactly is that? I know my MB has a two finger thing, where you can use 2 fingers as a 'right click", and use 2 fingers to scroll with... What is the other 2 finger feature on the MBP?

It's the ability to use other "gestures" to zoom, scroll, rotate etc.

Oooh.. OK! So you can rotate pictures, etc, just on the trackpad? Cool.

Yes, but only if the application supports it of course.

I went for the middle white one, went straight to 4Gb RAM and 320Gb HD with the money saved by not going for black. They're trivially easy to do yourself.

Try it with 2Gb RAM though, it's more than adequate unless you have very heavy needs such as running 2+ virtual machines. No real need to upgrade HD either unless you need more space straight off - you can use SuperDuper! to clone the old disk to a new, bigger one then just swap them over. No need to reinstall anything.

So back to the question I asked earlier, do you think I could get a MBP for <£1k just before the new ones come out??

ETA: Has anyone bought from this crowd before??

http://www.laskys.com/computing/apple_macs/apple_m...

And is this the early 2008 version or the late 2007 version??

I'm not that versed on my Mac serial numbers!

MB133B/A is current, as per the Apple Store online.
Nice wee saving there, but if you have a kid at school, you can avail of educational discount (7% iirc) for primary/secondary age, and 10%, I think if at uni, and they order trough their faculty.
If you phone Apple on the free-phone number, chances are you'd get the discount if you stated which uni (s)he was attending, not that they check.
Surprise birthday present, etc.

Good shout on the 10% discount, but that website already has 10% off as it is, looks good, I can get 1k from work interest free for 2 years (before tax) smile so that's only £169 to pay up front. Hmmm, do I go for it?

The other way for the Mid white macbook is to get from Dixons Tax free.

If you know anyone or yourself is traveling though an airport can pick one of these up for about £715 which is over £100 saving then just stick the Hdd and RAM yourself

indeed, i have just been informed that i have been left a small amount of cash in a will (which will cover a macbook with some change). I might wait a month or 2 before buying.

better spend it on something that i want but usually haven't got the cash for rather than pissing it away on bills or beer

Both Macs I bought two days before the new ones are announced - I don't have any plans to buy right now smile

Looking at the prices of the refurbished ones after the upgraded models become available (which are the older models), they /do not change/ (but you still get something like £150 off the price).

(Both of the ones I bought were refurbs, so I didn't lose out too much).
