An HTC Desire isn't much cheaper than an Iphone though. A 3GS is £419 from Apple. The Desire is £380 - £420.

But a Desire is massively better than a 3GS and an iPhone 4 is at least £500.

And that's before we get to the fact that a Desire is free on a £20 per month contract with a decent amount of minutes/texts/mb
The only way you will get an HTC Desire "free" for £20 per month is by using a reseller who is offering line rental redemption (cash back) on a £25 month contract. It isn't free anyway. There is a phone allowance built into the costing of the contract. It just means you are paying for your phone monthly rather than in one go.

I got mine free on a £20 per month contract direct from Vodafone with 300 minutes, Unlimited Texts and "Unlimited" internet. If I wanted an 18 month contract rather than 24 then it would have only been £5 more.

Sim only, Vodaphone are offering 300 minutes, Unlimited Texts for £15 per month, but then I'd have to pay £5 per month for the internet on top, bringing the cost to exactly the same £20 per month. So yes, (with a bit of negotiating) it is a FREE phone.

Wildcard...

I am a big fan of the soon to be released (supposedly) nokia n8 however a wildcard here could be the nokia x6.

Massive storage and 1 yr free access/downloads from nokia music store.
Capacitive screen much like iphone etc...

Cheers for comments on the Sony, might have to check that out, she does like pretty things. I think for her its all about playing games than anything else.

I also got my Desire free on a £25 per month contract over 18 months, would have been £20 a month over 24 months. I understand what your saying about there being a phone allowance, but that makes the iPhone deals even worse because your paying for the phone, and then paying for the monthly costs aswell - damit i got dragged into an anti-iphone comment, bugger, i'll put on my pointy hat and sit in the corner.

You may well have done. But Vodaphone are currently saying that the HTC Desire is only free on a £30 per month contract on their website. Did you get your Desire when they first came out? All the mobile operators have changed their contracts since then.

Vodafone may well say that but speak to their Twitter/eForum team and they will drop it to £25 without even asking. That's what they did for me - 600 mins, the rest 'unlimited'

Copy the iPhone? In what way? Having an internet browser, app store and touchscreen?

A slight change of tack here

Got an iphone 3g and liked it before apple made it crap with os4

However i like the utter transparent nature of it syncing with my mac

So is there a phone which is exceeding good and syncing with a mac that isn't a iphone4

Best non-Apple sync is probably a BlackBerry, or an iSync-supported S-E with a copy of SyncTunes.

The big fat problem with the HTC is syncing data especially contacts. You have 2 choices, create a gmail account ( you have to anyway) and create your contacts in gmail or buy a £50 bit of software. Good thing is the app Market is all free. Is is better than an iPhone? Not even close...

Eh?
I'm sure htc sync does it with your outlook, there's also exchange support for contacts, calendar, mail and tasks

Yep htc sync does that for you. Don't use it myself though as I use this as a personal not work phone - so need my gmails and contacts not my exchange stuff. You can if you want just export the contacts although you will then have them in 2 places. I do have 1 calendar which is synced between Outlook and Google - updates automatically every 4 hours.

The whole point of an Android phone though is you never need to plug it into a pc. Last time I plugged mine in was to create a goldcard to debrand it.

But you can still sync with both and switch the contacts off for your work stuff. I Know i have my google mail stuff and my (personal) exchange setup i could view all contacts or either, same with mail and calendar (i'm sure)

However i WOULD NOT have to pay £50 for an app ... The gentleman above is talking from an orifice that's not on his face.

I've had a shot of an iphone (admittedly a 3gs) for a week, a HD2 (winmo *shudder*) and now onto my desire ... I love the desire above all the rest

Not talking about contacts and e-mail

The iPhone syncs in one fell swoop

Itunes
photos
Podcasts
E-mail
Safari bookmarks
Apps
Contacts

and i have to do nothing other then drop the phone on its cradle

Is there a smart phone that does that seeing as many folk view the iPhone as a fashion victim choice i want to see if there is an alternative.

Let me see HTC. manufacturer of Smart Phone since when?

"In 1998, they started designing some of the world's first touch and wireless handheld devices. The company has a rich heritage of many "firsts", including creating the first Microsoft-powered smartphone (2002) and the first Microsoft 3G phone (2005).[5] Their first major product was made in 2000 and was one of the world's first touch screen smartphones." HTC wiki

I had one of those early HTC smart phones, ie I was listening to MP3's and using tom tom sat nav on a phone before Apple Iphone existed.

The only thing Apple did was improve the quality of the software experience, (finger friendly - your mileage may vary) touch screen, and subjective packaging,

As for app store, I was installing third party apps before Apple had an Iphone

Apple have contributed to the smart phone race, but they are not originators or innovators.
