I'm beginning to like the sound of Microsoft Security Essentials.

will it pick (in it's installation and scan for 'genuine') up slightly non-kosher versions of, say Office? smile

XP version is genuine

????

I found Microsoft Security Essentials caused massive issues with audio playback as it generated massive DPC latency spikes. Those spikes caused the audio to sound like it was crackling, glitching and popping. I went through EVERYTHING before working out it was MSE. I even accused Winamp of being crap on their forums, reinstalled everything on my machine, updated and rolled back drivers for everything... I wouldn't put MSE anywhere near my machine again.

MSE on:

MSE off:

Fairly conclusive. It seems I'm not alone in my findings: http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&expIds=17050,25...

In 20 years of having a PC I've never had a virus until I started to use MSE, then I had 3 in 3 months.

All of them were from perfectly innocent pictures.

I've started to use panda cloud antivirus and not had one since, oh and removing IE shortcuts from the PC so other people can't fire the crap up.

Holy crap. I spent ages trying to work out why a song I was creating was having strange audio output problems; the individual samples were fine but when I played it back, I could hear something wasn't quite right. So maybe MSE is the culprit.

I have had similar problems & first thought it was a problem with google image search. I once picked up a nasty looking for a picture of a mk2 escort van. smile

I'll bet you a tenner it's MSE. Turn it off and see whether you get the same audio issues. You can also download the DPC Latency checker from here: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Been using MSE since January this year. Never had an issue or a single infection. Audio is also perfect.

I can only speak as I find. It's also possible that you're simply not hearing the audio issues; what are you listening to your music through? It seems Shadowninja is doing audio recording/sampling and playback etc, and I listen to FLACs through about £4k's worth of hi-fi.. If you're listening on a pair of Logitech desktop speakers, it's highly likely you wouldn't notice. I'd be interested to know.

As for MSE's ability to protect the machine, I had no problems with it. It's just that it screwed up my audio horrendously and as a result I wouldn't put it near a machine ever again.

Seems like a nice space has appeared for a no bullst free anti-virus again after a long time of us having it good. Wonder if Google will get involved at any stage and throw their hat in?

Here's my DPC output with MSE running:

I also found it to be slow to update. Sorry chap, but there's no way I'll be convinced to let MSE anywhere near my machines again, ever.
