I'm not sure I'm a fan yet of the design itself, despite being a major Nexus fan!

If moving to Samsung or another android, will it work the same in the sense of logging into Google and everything will just load up - including current launcher / icons / contacts / apps etc?

I'm not sure I want to lose that all if I have to start from scratch!
Launcher etc wont move over. Samsung user their own launcher.

Once you have had vanilla Android its hard to go back to Samsung etc.

Stock Android is brilliant.

There's little better than stock with timely updates.

Assuming your contacts etc. are stored in the cloud, switching between Android phones is a doddle. You'll get pretty much all the stuff you had, but you'll likely have to set up your home screens again as that's one thing that varies quite a bit between phones.
Would it keep my apps and contacts etc?
I could redo Nova launcher as a worst case, it'll take a bit of time but it's simple enough, my biggest concern is the effort of downloading all my apps again and contacts / call lists etc

Yes there is a way to do a cloud backup of apps and contacts.

Not sure about Nova but my current launcher also allows you to back it up on the cloud to restore.

You can backup Nova launcher to your cloud drive, everything restored perfectly then.

I think a Pixel 2 XL could tempt me. I see EE will be selling them and my contract for my Nexus 6P comes to an end at the end of November. Assuming I still get my 30% F&F discount applied it could make the 2 XL quite an appealing proposition.

Or I could wait and see whether OnePlus get the 6 released early in 2018...

I've used a wide spectrum of different smartphone UIs and agree that stock is best. However, I can't help looking at the XL and think it's just a G6 with an updated SoC. The standard P2 doesn't really cut it with those bezels though.

Out of all the UIs (bar stock) I've really come to like the Huawei EMUI. Really is neat. Ties in quite nicely with the fact I'm waiting for the Mate 10 to release.

Apart from that I'm currently using a Maze Alpha and messing about with Nova launcher on it.

The camera on the new Pixels is quite something though if DxO Mark gave it a 98. How relevant is DxO with camera tests anyway?

Thread bump, need some help with my pixel. I'm running out of space, at 80% now. I've used the free up space thing which helps, but my photos take up 8.7GB. They are all backed up on the cloud, but if I delete one from my phone its deleted from the cloud and I don't want to lose them all.

How can I clear the phone memory down but retain the photos online?

This is only true if you delete them using the Photos app. If you delete the files using a file manager app, they remain in your Google account.

Can you use the free up space option in Google Photos which is access from the menu in the top left.

Are you using Google Photos ? It would've been set up from new as the default photo management app on your Pixel.
If yes;

  • Open Google Photos app on your Pixel
  • If they've all been backed up to your Google account in the cloud you'll see a cloud with a tick in it at the top right
  • If that cloud with the tick is present then open the side menu in G Photos and tap on 'Free Up Space', then follow the directions in the prompts

As above. My phone (Pixel 2 XL) is virtually empty of photos/videos all stored in Google Photos.

After 2 and a bit years my Pixel had a bit of a meltdown this morning. Was about 75% battery before I left for work. I chucked it in my bag and rode to work which took about 40mins, and when I got it out the other end it was really hot to the touch, and battery was around 20%. I tried a reboot which it did, then it seemed to power down entirely. It was still hot. I left it off for an hour then held down the power button for 30 seconds which seemed to kick it into life, but with 0% battery. I wacked the charger in and it now seems to be happily charging.

Here is the graph for battery life. What the hell happened?

My best guess is that an app got stuck in a loop or something and discharged the battery in double quick time. I've had it happen a couple of times with various other phones.

Thread bump. My pixel is really struggling now. I don't want to pay £36 a month plus £100 upfront for a 4, so am looking at a 3a. £22 a month plus £50 upfront.

Is it a worthwhile upgrade?

Get a 3? I wouldn’t get a 3a as I used one and it wasn’t a great experience
