I got mine at 20:35 .

The chap in store said that they do the allocations between 20:00 and 21:00 when the store is closed!

Matt
Knowing I would be in London on Thursday I tried to reserve one on Wednesday.

No response by 9.00pm, so think I'm out of luck.

Get up Thursday at 5.30 to get the train, check emails, there's a "thanks, please collect from regent st". .

Message arrived with me at 11.55pm.

Picked up thursday afternoon after an interesting hour in the queue!

Collected nano sim from vodafone on Oxford st., set up on the return train from paddington, happy days....

Walked into the second Carphone Warehouse this morning after also visiting two other o2 shops in town.

Ask the member of staff.

'I think I might already know the answer to this question but do you have any 5's left?'

His reply was.

'Contract or sim free?'

Contract on o2 please.

'White or Black?'

White

'What size?'

16gb

He then looked at me with a long pause and said......

'You're in luck I've got one left!'

Walked out with a new shiny one.

Not even turned it on yet just been holding it like a child.

The 5 is a big upgrade on my 3GS. Siri is good fun and the phone seems very light.

The screen sharpness makes my iPad look a bit dull in comparison.

Got to have a little chuckle at all you pre-order guys.

I'm a little lazy with things like this, and while I did really want to get the new iPhone, I never bothered to go dig out my O2 password and try pre-order online. Then I resigned myself to having to wait a little longer when I read reports of storming pre-order numbers and that if I ordered now it would be at least 3 weeks before I got it.

Anyway, Friday 21st rolled around and I just decided I would chance my luck with the local O2 store. Checked on line, in stock as of mid night but stocks not updated until 10:30 by which time the store have been open about 2 hours. Surely, the masses gathered out side would of depleted the likely scant reserves.

Rocked up at half past 10. Not a soul in sight. Lots of O2 staff and one of them looking very disappointed that there is no one to give the free breakfast bags to. iPhone five? yes. 16gb in white? yes. Right this way sir. Bish bash bosh, traded my old 4 in, picked up a case and screen protectors and £22 later walked out with a brand new 5 all transferred over and working perfectly. Even got a free breakfast to boot.

The O2 staff were absolutely bemused. They'd prepared pretty well for the expected queue of people wanting the new shiny thing from apple. Free breakfast bags to appease those in the queue, extra staff to put the sales through quickly. When I turned up I think I was the 3rd person they'd had in. All I have read since is people moaning about pre-orders being late, not turning up or being completely wrong. Score one for the high street there!

Don't go play with a new iPad then. My dad has a new iPad and we have the 2. The 2 is of course perfectly fine and usable, but then you have a go on the 3 and the screen just looks incredible. Then you go back to your iPad 2 and it now looks a bit second rate. Annoying!

Similar to me and Johnny. Only I categorically stated I didn't want a 5. Had no interest in a 5. Was more than happy with my 4. Friday lunch time & the 5 is mentioned...I said he should get one if he wants...Friday at 5.15pm we both walk in to the O2 store, and both leave with 64gb iPhone 5s...

With regard to d/l speeds achieved on the i5, I'm with T-Mobile (well, EE I suppose, now) and couldn't be happier with the speeds I'm seeing.

I've run speedtest.net approximately 10 times throughout this afternoon/evening and achieved an average of 82ms ping, 12.2mb/s down and 3.48mb/s up.

Is this unusually fast?

I'm nowhere near a city (rural Yorkshire) and can't get anything over 2.5mb/s through home broadband, so we're hardly at the cutting edge of data transfer rates in this area. smile

The reason for the lack of queues at the O2 shops was probably because they were charging a lot more for the phones in store than ordering online.
I had the choice of paying £299 for a 32gb online or £369 in store, I took the cheap alternative. I suppose a lot of people preferred to pay the cheaper price and wait.

Not sure that's always the case. Mine was £30 cheaper in store than it would've been online.

It is this time round. Ive been with them for years and expected a similar deal as online but it seems that the in store prices were higher to stop masses of people queuing at the shops.
Here are the in store prices. http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/iphone-5/retail
These prices are quite different to ordering online.

Yes, maybe. But I ACTUALLY paid £30 LESS IN STORE for mine than I would've done had I ordered on line...
I admit it doesn't look that way from your post.

I defected from O2 as well when I got mine (now on 3 but I admit it was a bad choice as signal at home is st, it's mostly on No Service and I'll probably chuck a complaint in next week). My reasoning for leaving O2 was that I'd put my name down and hadn't heard anything even a week after every other network had released their tariffs. I went in to cancel and took a cheeky peek at the pre-order names list - I was on the second page and I reckon at least half of the names had been crossed out. O2 seem to have lost a hell of a lot of iPhone customers...
