You'd probably need the cheapest nastiest crash switch, if such a thing even exists.

Or an auto switch, and pull the cable out of the laptop when you want to use the other source.
One of mine is a cheap nasty one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08526J4CN that has this behavior. Does mean all your windows get re-arranged, as several people in the reviews complain.
I suspect the reason it is live on the 'better' switch is because of this, it is the more desired state.

An alternative for @illmonkey would be to get a 3rd screen and use some mouse/keyboard sharing software like Synergy - https://symless.com/synergy (not the only one available). Would get round all of the issues with the switch.

Thanks for all the replies. I really don’t want to have to unplug or swap anything about. Kind of defies the point for me!

It’s just monitor, usb and K&M are not in the equation. It’s probably a strange setup, but it works well for me!

Thanks, this might be a winner. Also more expensive that the one I purchased from Amazon!

I've done this very thing on 80+ desks. If the ones your trying don't work let me know and I'll find out the make/model of the ones we've got in work, they weren't expensive and do what your asking for.

Could you find out please? I’ve had 1 recommended but very poor reviews. Thanks!

These are meant to be very good and highly configurable - the price is however quite steep for home use.

I have the Level1 Techs for dual monitor. Not much else that offers the same functionality.

Thanks to this thread popping up last week I am currently revamping the desk situation at home. Out with the faithful IKEA Fredrik and in with a wall to wall floating worktop to maximise space. Due to other constraints I have opted for a desk that is only 600mm deep (which is what we are used to working with really) so now looking for a dual monitor wall mount that will hold 2 x 27” monitors quite flush to the wall - any recommendations?

Will actually be PC + dual monitors (Philips 272B’s), Macbook + monitor (unknown) plus space for charging camera equipment.

Will post before/after images when done since I’ve gained so much inspiration from this thread already!

Why a dual monitor arm? If you have a wall you could just have two individual mounts.

Depends on how you want to mount them/how flexible you want to be. I've got three gas strut arms, makes it a bit harder to align them properly but very easy to move them out of the way, pull them out/orient them differently. At least the "scissor" ones, allow for no up and down movement but do allow for in and out which is very convenient if you want to do anything else on the desk.

We've got a number of Neomounts (they get rebranded as PureMounts as well iirc) and I've been very happy about the value and quality of them.

In the process of trying to get mine set up properly. Decorated as it was when we bought the place but that's not a priority.

Couple of Samsung 27" monitors of some sort run from an M2 Macbook Pro with a convenient sliding dock thing for ease of taking it away. That's the work set up which syncs with what I have in the office on a Mac Studio.

The iMac and M2 Macbook Air also in sync and are "home use only" i.e. I use them when I don't want to be bothered with Whatsapp, iMessage, Outlook etc so just migrating them together so they also stay in sync, iMac will go in my man cave and Air will live under the sofa in the lounge.

Change of subject, blown away by the battery life on the Air.

I guess I just defaulted to thinking dual monitors, dual arm…

Interesting, there are a couple of options I quite like in there. Two individually mounted monitors seems more appealing all of a sudden - thanks.

A dual arm might be useful if you want to easily move one monitor in front of you.

The Neomounts stuff is pretty decent. Better than most of the budget stuff, not at the Ergotron or Ergomounts level.

The Northern European Operations Centre (thanks Covid, used to commute 30 miles 4 days a week, now twice a month!)
Used to have big monitors, but now prefer the flow of smaller, secondary for Teams etc, laptop for ‘work’, rely on laptop keyboard to save space. Jabra speaker for a few years for the calls. Sounds fine. ipad for Tv. Alexa speaker for radio.
It’s a hard life…

Very simple setup.

Looking tidy as we had just had the estate agents round to take the photos of our house.

Desk makes everything look small, the desk is 1.9m wide
34" Phillips curved screen which powers laptop
Dell laptop for work
iPad Pro for YouTube
Elgato mic for Teams calls as I don't like wearing a headset

I have made some minor upgrades:

3 x LG 40WP95 5120x2160 monitors

Rebuilt PC with:
ROG Maximus Hero Z790
i9-13900KS on water
GeForce RTX4090
64Gb of XMP-2 RAM (I have 128Gb but the board won't drive it at XMP2, annoyingly)
3 x M2 Samsung 980Pro 2Tb SSDs (boot plus a RAID0 stripe for data)
8 x 16Tb HDD in RAID6; 4 x 12Tb HDD in RAID5; 4 x 4Tb SSD in RAID0 all hanging off a RocketRaid 2840C
QNAP T310 thunderbolt to 10GbE adapter (because I have no PCI slots left, 4090s are physically huge)
...talking to the Synology DS1821+ and DX517 hiding off to the right via a Zyxel 1250-12 (bargain-tastic managed 10GbE switch)

All this so I can be grumpy on the internet when I should be in bed.

My cable management still needs work, though...and the case needs a going over with the air compressor

yes

I'm due an upgrade (running a 2070), but my case is rack-mounted and won't fit a 4090.

The Ikea Signum cable tray is well worth a look, the wire construction means it's really easy to hook cables in to it. I have 2 mains multiway extensions sat in mine and then al the wires hooked in on top.

Another fan here, I've got 3,5m of desk with this underneath.
What I like about them is that they also give access on both sides, and they stand away from the desk enough you can ziptie power strips into them.
Just make sure the screws you use aren't too long.... it happened to a friend of mine whistle

I take it other dog owners have to explain why they start to gag on Teams calls when their mutt lets go with a silent but deadly fart?
