So is it an annual fee I have to pay? I’ve only flown about 4 times this year if I have to pay an annual fee I may just sell it.
Or just not bother paying. Lets face it, no-one will jump through these hoops as it's almost completely unenforceable, and so long as you're being sensible and not taking the piss with where you fly, who is going to check?Order66 said:

How do you define if it’s a toy or not? I have Lego that costs more than a magic mini and that’s quite clearly a toy.....

It's £9 per year, you're assigned an operator id which you then clearly label on your drone. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal at the moment. So is it an annual fee I have to pay? I’ve only flown about 4 times this year if I have to pay an annual fee I may just sell it.
The changes in regulations at the year are, if anything, becoming more relaxed and understanding of the use cases for drones around business and enthusiast use.

No I get that but when I’m flying it so infrequently it just becomes an added cost. If they said it’s a £9 registration for a new drone or change of ownership I get it but CAA are clearly doing this just to fill their bank account. Late to the party and just got one of these at the weekend now the price has dropped with the release of the Mini 2.
Properly impressed with the whole package.
Really stable flight even in the wind and at height, faster than I expected and delivers some really quality looking video and pictures with close to zero practice.
Photography experience does come in handy with composition and settings though.
Still worry when I take it really high and/or far away that it won't be coming back or it will just stop and come down like a meteor..!

I have been flying quads since pretty much day 1, home brew with Naza. I still worry that I will have a fly away or esc/motor failure!
The software on the current DJI stuff is pretty good and I would say its unusual to have anything bad happen - its mostly operator error. The mini can even detect motor / prop issues before they cause a big issue.
Follow a good pre flight checking things like RTH height settings etc, let the GPS warm up for at least 2 minutes, check your home point is set and then hover for at least a minute to ensure stability in all the systems and you should be good.
I had a slightly embarrassing moment the other day. I took my mini away to the canaries late last year and got some great shots however I didn't really go through the footage in any great detail until last week.
I was taking off from our balcony and flying straight out away from the hotel over the sea and then flying up and down the beach @c200' AGL usually staying about 20m out over the water just in case of any incidents (birds were a worry).
Anyway when flying back to the balcony to land I was flying nose in. Wasn't really paying attention to the other balconies in the hotel. All I will say is in future I will be landing tail in so the camera does not capture anything when flying to land on any balcony from now on!!!
Before anyone asks the footage from that flight has been deleted!!

If you can, go for the Mini 2 rather than the original Mini.
The Mini uses a wifi connection to the controller so you're limited on distance - realistically 500m is the average max. range you'll get before you lose signal ( I've seen up to a Km, and as little as 150m under varying conditions )
The Mini 2 uses Ocusync 2.0, and is good for 5km or more ( I've tested mine up to 4.5km before battery capacity forced a return ) so no more range anxiety other than that caused by battery capacity

Indeed"Always keep your drone or model aircraft in direct sight and make sure you have a full view of the surrounding airspace
You must be sure that you can spot any nearby hazards in the air or on the ground and avoid collisions.
You must be able to see your drone or model aircraft without using:
binoculars
a telephoto lens
electronic viewing equipment, such as a smart phone, tablet or video goggles"
