Dinosaur here running Yosemite 10.10.5 on a 2013 iMac but getting worried by regular warnings telling me that I need to upgrade both OSX and Chrome in order to be 'supported'. Can anybody tell me what I can safely upgrade to without losing access to things like Word docs (the fear of which has stopped me upgrading up to now)?
If there is no way to avoid losing Word as a result of upgrading the OSX, would I be able to translate existing docs into a different word processing programme?
Apparently Chrome needs upgrading but I can't do that on 10.10.5. Grrr. All I want to do really is carry on working quietly with what I've got, but it seems that's not allowed and I have to be dragged through the computing equivalent of a gorse bush.
I don't know if it's connected but as of this morning PH's privacy notice keeps popping up before every action I try to do, irrespective of the answers I'm giving.
V grateful for any help.
The simplest solution is create a back up - use a pen drive or hard drive and just duplicate anything important to it - just in case. If there is no way to avoid losing Word as a result of upgrading the OSX, would I be able to translate existing docs into a different word processing programme?

ETA a couple of sites I've tried to go to (normal ones!) have this morning said I can't go to them because 'my clock is ahead'???

Microsoft Word for Mac 2011, version 14.4
For info, on my MBPro (as opposed to the iMac) I'm having no trouble with bogus clock error reports or constant Privacy Notice popups which I'm getting on the iMac this morning. The MB Pro is running Sierra 10.12.6. The iMac is on Yosemite 10.10.5.

ah so you are more worried about losing the application?
I would add, I recently move to Mac and reluctantly paid for office 365 (it's cheaper on eBay for a legit annual pass).
It's worth every penny. You have the latest application versions, 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage included. This means you can save your documents to your Mac, but access them on your laptop, phone, etc. Edits on any device carry over.
Making use of the package contents shows how good value it is to be honest.

Would happily pay for something as you suggest but I would prefer to simply switch to the Pages app that comes with the Mac. I just need to not lose access to thousands of Word docs!
Right now my priority is to get rid of the PH privacy popups and the incorrect 'clock error' messages that are not allowing me to go to various sites. That problem has just started on my Yosemite iMac. Short term I can switch to the Sierra MBP which is not affected by any of this, which is making me think that I need to upgrade the OSX on the iMac.

Don't see why you'd lose the files (especially if you have them on an external drive).
Pages will open Word documents (sort of). You might lose some fonts and formatting
The reason you will not be able to run Word 2011 is because it's 32 bit and Apple stopped allowing 32 bit apps with Catalina (10.15)
The other alternative is the online version of Word which I assume will work on a Mac, never tried though

What dow the experts say to : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LC34J791WTRXXU-Cu...
It does not 'say' 4k. but otherwise appears right?
The clots at Currys this evening is the reason we all buy from the internet !
Or.... https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/329P9H_00/brilliance... is the answer?

No, it's not 4k, as that would be a 2160 horizontal resolution - the Samsung is closer to a 'double-wide' VA 1440p monitor. What dow the experts say to : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LC34J791WTRXXU-Cu...

It's a perfectly good monitor, and has more screen real estate as the 4k IPS Philips...just depends whether you're happier with an ultra-wide or a standard-format 4k monitor?
Personally, I'd go for a cheaper (arguably better) version of the Philips type like the LG 32UL750 (£540):

...or a cheaper version of the Samsung ultrawide like the LG 35WN75C (£490):

...or if you want LOTS of screen, and have the space, there's the LG 43UN700 (£630):

That is the likely favourite now thanks. Downsides... ? https://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-35wn75c

The only 'downside' I can see vs the Samsung is that the LG only has 1 x USB-C connection vs the 2 x Thunderbolt 3 ones of the Samsung. The rest of the specs are almost identical, with exceptions being:
- Screen curvature: Samsung 1500R vs LG 1800R (higher the number, the smaller the curve)
- Contrast ratio: Samsung 3000:1, LG 2500:1
- Colour gamut: Samsung 92% Adobe RGB (good) / 125% sRGB (maybe over saturated), LG 90% Adobe RBG (good) / 99% sRGB (great)
