All you need is Wugfresh Nexus toolkit, should even download the factory image so you don't need to do that seperately.
Absolute doddle to do, I've used it many times with Nexus devices.
Thanks. Absolute doddle to do, I've used it many times with Nexus devices.
Only downside is that, unlike an OTA, a factory image looks like it does a full factory reset. Not that much of a big deal, I guess, as I only use the 2012 N7 around the house now. But still an annoyance.
I actually prefer to do a full reset usually helps keep the number of apps installed down a bit as it makes me realise which apps I actually use and which are clutter.
If you already have another device running Lollipop you can use the NFC and I'll install all your apps and settings onto the new device.

I have a paid-for Helium which purports to do the same. Only, as I found when I moved from a Moto G 1st Gen to a 2nd Gen, it doesn't. But, yes, it's a fair point. It is a good de-cluttering exercise.

So, if I'm not tekkie and don't want to risk downloading odd versions, side loading etc. with my 2012 N7, if I hold out a little longer there should be a decent OTA idiot proof fix? I also only use mine around the house and at race meetings so I can make do with the laptop and phone at this time of year.

I'm not the greatest as flashing roms and firmware etc, in fact I think I've only ever managed to debrand an old Nokia once, so I'm waiting for the ota 5.2 to be released, shouldn't be long I hope.I have not had a 5.0.1 OTA notification yet on my N4. A little while back somebody suggested long pressing on notifications that you didn't want to install to stop getting bugged by the system. Would this have disabled all system update notifications? I suspect I'm just being impatient, but just in case...
My brother isn't interested in phones but needed a new one so I recommended a Moto G, and he got a first generation 8GB one.
One of the reasons I recommended it (apart from the price) was the quick updates, but he hasn't got Android 5.0 yet (he's still on 4.4.4 like my Sony).
Is this typical?

It will get it but not just yet. Be patient its not a Nexus. One of the reasons I recommended it (apart from the price) was the quick updates, but he hasn't got Android 5.0 yet (he's still on 4.4.4 like my Sony).

The 2nd gen is getting it earlier.
OTA updates are done in batches, not all device's are done at the same time to reduce load on server's etc, when the original 5.0 lollypop update was found to be causing issues, the update was stopped, so you were one of the later item's that would have been in line for update, be thankful yours is still on 4.4, wish mine was.

Thanks. I just remember reading that they'd get updates earlier than most as it was (then) a Google-owned company and they use an almost pure version of Android. The 2nd gen is getting it earlier.
So a definite couple of oddities for me and different on the N4 and N7 (2013).
On the N4 is I have vibrate set then alarms won't sound, this wasn't the case on 4.4.4, alarms always sounded audibly.
On the N7, if I mute the volume, it comes back on when priority alerts turns off?! It doesn't do this on the N4 so why does it do it on the N7?
