you should be more concerned about how MS treated WP7 customers... smile

Totally shoved a pointed object up their posteriors ...

Very true that regarding the 808, The images seemed cleaner too.

With the initial photographs I've taken with it, the colour balance does seem more realistic, especially with grass which never looked right with the previous update.
Finally bought a 1020.

After a month of using an Xperia SP, I'm just not getting on with Android as a phone OS. Its fine on a tablet, but it just feels a little clunky in a phone. And the Xperia SP has fairly decent hardware.

Main disappointments with the 1020 are surprisingly with the camera.

Flash doesn't appear to even have half the range of the 808. Standard night shots in the garden. 808 manages to illuminate the whole thing. 1020 ... doesn't.

No equivalent of the 808s creative modes, where you could have 3 custom settings. I had standard (5mp), high contrast B&W and a whacky fully saturated/vivid colour ... no B&W option that I can find on the 1020.

Zoom isn't handled anything like as well as the 808 either.

Nor is there an option in the stock camera applications for autofocus/macro/hyperfocal/infinity (I've updated it to the Black & GDR3). 1shot offers it ... but I can't be having with multiple camera applications.

Feel free to point out the options if they are there ...

But it is a nice device to use, the glance screen is like a slightly enhanced variant of what was on Symbian, sound quality through headphones is pretty good and everything is nice and slick. Its a joy to be back on a device that properly makes use of an OLED screen. Black backgrounds, simple themes, unlike the retina burning iOS7 or that vivid garish nonsense that Samsung or Sony put on their devices.

yeah WP8 is a slick OS but still not even close to iOS/Android ecosystem, however not everyone is crazy about gazillion of iFart apps so many people will find it enough for their needs

camera options? Well if you are any serious about photography the only option you should really use is RAW, which will take you half a minute per shooting and half an hour for postprocessing...but that's how it is on superduper modern WP8.

I myself don't mind having two devices with me so 808&cheap Android tablet will do a lot more for half the money of 1020.

The camera options are right there, you click on the onscreen camera icon on camera mode and drag it left and they're all on the dials?

not enough options unfortunately, the strange thing is there is still yellow tint on 1020 with Black update while it's non-existent on 1520 also with Black...

Definitely not enough options. They give you white balance, focus (manual), ISO, shutter speed (not available on the 808), exposure compensation. No colour balance, sharpness or contrast options.

If you're coming from Android or iOS (I also have a 4S and an Xperia SP) the camera interface is pretty good. Coming from an 808 its not bad, but overall its a step backwards.

But refocus is a darned slick bit of software. No need for me to buy a Lytro now.

Got a tweet from a fellow 1020 owner on 3 who said an update had appeared for them. Looked for an update on mine over 3G, ended up getting a call whilst it was searching. Finished the call (13 mins later) and my phone said the update was ready to install. Its installing at the moment, I'm guessing its the black update. Anyone know what the file size is for it?

Is your 1020 locked to 3, or SIM free? Mine is locked to 3 and there is no sign of an update yet frown

Locked to 3, bought on a contract from them as a pre order. It installed, did some rejigging and then loaded up. However phone info claims I'm on the exact same version of Amber as I was before. What the chuff are 3 playing at?

Took a while to install it but after a reboot or two the notification I was waiting for appeared. "Welcome to Lumia Black".

Initial impressions are that it seems slicker, more responsive. Rotation lock was a much needed option as was the ability to close apps properly. Will have a proper play later after work.

Lumia black releases can be found here:

IIRC 'coming soon' means you're closer to getting the update than 'waiting for approval' but don't quote me on that!

4G has been active on mine since the start. Getting some pretty hectic speeds, this was on a train at 50MPH, also proving the LTE stuff works at speed unlike 3G.

I just downloaded and installed the update.

On the down side, it took 2 attempts to get it done. The first time it gave some hex error code, I guess it wouldn't be a Microsoft update without a meaningless error code of some kind smile

On the up side, the phone does appear faster. The screen seems to render much faster. This is particularly noticeable in the gallery. Nothing appears to be broken so far.

My updated went on without any problems.

First impression.

I like being able to put tiles into folders. Now have one large tile for the Nokia camera and a folder beside it for all the other camera apps.

Battery life seems to have improved.

Bluetooth. I'd always had problems with it keeping connection to my portable Sony hcb-105 handsfree kit, but it would stay connected to my Parrot CK3100 in the SAAB without problem. Since the update it appears to now stay connected to the Sony.

Driver mode. Only had a play with it so far, but I like the idea.

Thinking of picking one of of these (Lumia 1020) up as a replacement for my ageing Huawei Ascent P6.

I like the P6, it's a great all round phone and does exactly what I want but being around 18 months old now, the batter life is starting to become an issue. Standby, no problem, but watching a 10 min video on you tube can kill 40-50% of the battery in one go these days.

I've always wanted to try Windows phone and the OS seems to be much more mature now than it was when the 1020 first came out. I really don't think I'll be missing anything I use on Android at all. The camera is what draws me to the 1020 (otherwise I would just go and buy a brand new 525 for £89), being into photography myself, the camera is important but seeing that I can pick up a 1020 for around £200, boxed as new, it seems like a bit of a bargain.

Now some of you will hopefully have lived with these phones for a while, does anyone have any advice either way?

check if the apps you need are supported on WP and that would be it
