I've always wanted to try Windows phone and the OS seems to be much more mature now than it was when the 1020 first came out. I really don't think I'll be missing anything I use on Android at all. The camera is what draws me to the 1020 (otherwise I would just go and buy a brand new 525 for £89), being into photography myself, the camera is important but seeing that I can pick up a 1020 for around £200, boxed as new, it seems like a bit of a bargain.

Now some of you will hopefully have lived with these phones for a while, does anyone have any advice either way?
Windows Phone is pretty good, I'm tempted to go back on the developer preview for W10, apparently it is now much improved (the first release left my 1020 stuck in flight mode, an option that wasn't supposed to be available).

Unless you're getting the 1020 for a VERY good price, I'd suggest steering clear. The camera has an irritating flaw - performance. Autofocus is way too slow, camera startup time is almost enough to brew a cuppa, shot to shot time is also pretty bad. The old 808 could start the camera, focus and take a shot and be back in my pocket while the 1020 is waiting to load the camera.

I like the 1020 - a very good phone. Rumors abound of something to replace it in a few months though. Equally as many rumors that nothing will replace it. God love rumors.

But, a windows phone; I'm a bit of a tech geek and I love it, so it's not just something for non-power users.

As someone above said; the only negative is really the amount of apps available for it. There are always "versions" of what you're after, but often not the exact ones. Plus, no biggies like snapchat or tinder (though there are Win Phone equivalents)

I've already looked at the apps and everything bar Strava is covered but im sure I could live with an equivalent. TBH I'm not one to be always wanting to try the latest apps or wanting to play games on my phone. I can't remember the last time I downloaded anything from the google app store.

Camera startup speed would be annoying. The huawei isn't slow but can stall sometimes and take a couple of seconds before the camera kicks in. I find that annoying...

Just been looking at options to "upgrade" my O2 contract early. Sadly O2 aren't carrying many Lumia phones these days. The 1020 isn't listed at all. The 930 is though, as is the 735 which looks interesting. Probably on par with my P6 in just about every respect. Just average. The 930 looks a beast and the camera on that reviews very well too, although I'm really keen on the 1020 camera. Not just because of the MP count, but more because it has a larger sensor than anything else on the market and a proper flash. The quality of images out of it really are fantastic. Obviously no match for my DSLR but my DSLR doesn't come everywhere with me.

Hmmmmm...

My Lumia 1020 has been sat about gathering dust for a while now. Switched back to an iPhone a while back as I got fed up with my 1020. I need to pester Three again to get my unlock code so I can get it sold.

In the case of Tinder, the third party version is WAY better than the official version on iOS (it includes features that you have to pay for on iOS). Apparently the same with snapchat.

The 930 is a cracking device; same camera as the 1520 (which has now been dropped). Has the faster camera startup time due to Lumia Camera 5 (ie. almost instant). Absolute still image quality isn't as good as the 1020, but still probably better than most out there.

If you're after a proper flash, apparently its going to be available on the Asus ZenPhone 2 as an extra - similar to what SE did with the K750 years back (surprised that something similar hasn't been done for the iPhone).

Ah I didn't know that about Tinder. Thanks.

For snapchat - I had 6snap (the WinPhone equivalent) for ages, but then got a message from Snapchat saying that becaue I Was accessing through a third party, they'd disable my account. All those snapchat leaks at the beginning of the year happened through a third party provider (not this one, but similar). As a result, snapchat have come down heavily (understandably so). You could still use 6snap, but I've seen message boards of people getting disabled, so is not the perfect solution just yet.

I have a work iphone, so just use snapchat on that.

My 1020 had an unfortunate interface with a toilet, aren't children great?

So I opted for a 930 to replace it - it's faster in every way, particularly on camera startup and taking pictures which is a massive improvement.

The pictures aren't as good (no stabilisation) but frankly they still poop on almost every other phone camera out there.

Plus my contract dropped by £17 a month (I was still in contract), so I guess all in all I'd say the upgrade was a win. Looking forward to W10 though, looks like a decent step forward, the one app to rule them all model should help with app availability after a little while.

Facetime was the main bugbear for me as the rest of my family have iPhones, that and syncing documents between my iPad and my iPhone. The camera is leagues ahead of my 5s but I made the switch anyway.

Stopped using mine some months ago. Mainly due to blue tooth problem I mention on the previous page reappearing after another update. I'll still take it out with me if I know there's a chance I'll want to take some photos.

I now use a 635, which I originally bought as a test phone as a was playing around at writing a couple of apps. So its more the opposite now, 635 as the daily and 1020 as the play phone.

As others have said the camera is great but just slow. All the new/latest official camer apps don't work on the 1020 (or other phones of that generation) as they do not have the power/speed to run them.

They need to announce a new flagship phone soon as the 1020 is almost 2 years old, so people are going to want to start upgrading soon.

Agreed - I got my 1020 on launch day (September 2013?)...so coming up to 2yrs and am starting to look and learn. There have been rumors of a 1030, but also rumors of them not replacing it; we shall see! But come September, I'll be wanting to upgrade I'm sure.

I think they're waiting for W10 to be complete before announcing anything; it is however frustrating that MS have done nothing to improve the camera startup time on the 1020 (the reasons they've given are purely excuses/lazyiness - they could improve it, they just choose not to do so).

Whilst I'm intrigued by a 1020 successor, I have a feeling that they're going to lose the increasingly slender lead they had on imaging (SGS5, Xperia Z3, new LG, etc are seriously close to the 1020). I can imagine that I'll be defecting back to Android and Sony (much prefer the Sony designs).

Don't for God's sake be tempted to install the Dev Preview yet. Mine updated one night after I forgot to remove the insider app. It is nowhere near the stage that Win 10 on the desktop is.

Ta for the heads up - I was getting comments at work suggesting I should give it a crack but it's critical for my job that my phone is stable so I'll hold off a bit on this.

I tried the first release of W10 on my 1020. It took 24 hours to become a paperweight. Thankfully the restore to factory defaults and reinstallation of W8 went through fine (albeit taking ages to go through the various updates).

W10 on the mobile does look to have lots of potential, it tended to look better, was generally a little sluggish, but obviously a lot of work to do. Considerably more than on the desktop (which looks close to being production ready).
