Mine pulses with a bluish/whitish light at the bottom middle of the front.

I'm using hangouts for SMS (ie the Kitkat default) and gmail for my emails.

As above, but I've also added an app flashME which flashes the camera flash LED when phone rings.

Mine doesn't light up.

I've installed Light Flow, and this works (supports different colours) - http://www.droid-life.com/2013/11/06/reminder-the-...

When I was reading up over the weekend, there seemed to be a number of people complaining about the same issue. I'd rather not have to rely on the LightFlow application tbh.

Why is it when apps automatically update, they are removed from my homepage or disabled? Is there a setting to stop this happening?

B) the genuine complaints about battery life are likely people who sit there playing with their new toy for ages every day and wonder why it's flat.

As has been said, there's no issue with battery life for normal use.
I completely disagree with that sentiment. These all singing, all dancing devices are setup for connectivity. Yet with moderate web usage, some streaming, Google Now and NFC - what they're made to do - there's no way in hell I'd last all day with it.

Battery technology seriously needs to catch up with current hardware.

None of my apps do that.

Strange. Two apps auto-updated earlier and after the update had finished, the shortcut for one disappeared from my homepage, so I had to restore it.
The other app is a live background and when that finished updating, the background disappeared and was replaced with the standard Google one, so I had to restore the original one manually.

I think battery life is acceptable from the way I've been using it so far. I don't spend all day making calls or live streaming video so I'm sure it's going to be perfectly fine, particularly once I've put a couple of Qi chargers in the places I leave my phone at home, office etc.

I remember the days when mobiles had to be charged overnight every night and they only made phone calls and had alpha numeric displays, so I'm used to charging whenever I have the opportunity and I also prefer to turn off Wifi, BT, data,GPS etc. when I'm not using it, so the biggest power draw on mine is the screen.

I'm very happy with mine. A big step up from my Nokia and much nicer to use than my GF's iPhone.

I'd be quite happy if they just made the handset twice as thick and filled it with battery.

There are some chinese manufacturers who apply this mindset, friend of mine has one. Though it does feel like a brick to hold it.

Re. battery life, so far much better than my Galaxy Nexus.
This only seems to work when the phone's in sleep mode for me, which is annoying if you want one consistent way to see that you've got a new message. Maybe it's a bug, or maybe it's because I've configured something else stopping it from working when the display is on?

You can buy a thing that does pretty much that, but I'd not buy it.

Something like this: (N4 accessory) --

Apparently it'll only work when the display is off.

Has anyone noticed that Google Play Services (google now) using up a lot of battery. After 7 hours on battery today the play services had used 30% of the battery ahead of the (normally power hungry ) screen at 25%

I did some forum reading and a factory reset has been suggested. Im just curious to see if anyone else has noticed it

"Google Now" activates the microphone the whole time.

Try this from the home screen:
Just say "OK GOOGLE" then it'llwake up voice search without you pushing any buttons. Then ask it for your search, for example "show me an image of a potato". It'll do it.

"Google Now" also uses GPS, WIFI and a fair amount of bandwidth in order to show you maps of the journey it predicts you're about to do, looks at your email to figure out if your friend's birthday is tomorrow, shows you any stocks you're interested in, or sports teams etc etc.
Keeping the google now cards up to date isn't straightforward.

Google Now is optional. If you don't use it/want it, then turn it off. It's an app.

Edited to add: Here's what it looks like in the "what's been using my battery" list:

Mine did that morning. I "turned it off and on again" and the screen has returned to being the top of the battery usage list.

Same here, turning off location services from within the google now settings screen seems to have fixed it, for now.

For those that have phones on order but haven't arrived yet, do Google charge your card immediately when you order, or when the phone is dispatched?

Not sure if this is too late, but they don't charge until they dispatch your phone.
