I keep returning to this thread then go down a rabbit hole trying to find a torch, to no avail!
Perhaps one of you would be good enough to help?
My criteria:
Approx 1500-2000lm
Up to £100
Be good quality and preferably from a well regarded manufacturer.
I would rather pay more and not be manufactured in China.
Simple to use – on/off and perhaps three light levels.
Hopefully be able to alter the pattern of light throw from distance to wide
Must have:
USB charging
Many thanks.
Look at some of the posey bike lights maybe?Perhaps one of you would be good enough to help?

Personally I think the 'more lumens' willy waving is missing the point. I mostly want to put a useful amount of light in the right place.
I'm biased towards sailing where not destroying your night vision helps.
In the limt of course we have 'steamer scarers', a 100W halogen, backed up by pyrotechnics.

Thank you for the suggestion but I don't want a head torch - I want a baton/hand held and really want to be able to change the throw of light.
I used to use led lenser zoom able torches 'professionally' for mountain rescue. They were / a solution to the limitations of led and battery tech of the time. There really is no need for zoomable torches these days. The led tech is such that you can buy handelds with a flood beam with nigh on a kilometre of throw. I have an old nightcore that is a usable 600m.
I have the perun 2 that the poster above mentions. It's not strictly a head torch as it is a stand alone with a head strap. It easily fills a football field with light... I use it for dog walks on the moors on dark mornings.

I bought this a year ago, super pleased with it.
Small enough to fit in pocket yet can light up a football field when required.
Battery is usb rechargeable
Minor issues are the low setting isnt really low enough and on high it throttles back after about 60s due to thermal issues. Good hand warmer on cold nights tho
I need a new torch for work. Ideally no more than £60 on Amazon (got some vouchers to use). Not fussed about battery or USB charged (battery would be better as work provide them and easier to change).
I've got a P14 currently which is fine but too big to carry on me at work.
I'm properly going to go for a smaller one (P7) but just wondering if I'm missing anything else.

Not bought a new torch in a long while, but just arrived is a Sofirn SP33. Bit of an overkill for what Mrs F requires, but feels quality and can't wait to (ahem) borrow it for an evening dog walk.
I've been pretty impressed with my couple of Sofirms, good for a relatively cheap price IMEJimbobVFR said:

I purchased a Sofirn SP33 on Amazon discount day for £55 – but it didn’t hold charge, so sent it back and even if I wanted to try another they are back to £69.
Ooh puzzled, £49.99 here. SP33 V3 that's what I paid anyway. The SP33S with the powerbank is a lot more today, £134 or so.

I've been using the Frog as EDC kingring for the past few months, it's bright and uses USB-C but requires the use of the included dongle to charge and you need to remember to rotate the case slightly so the status light isn't lit otherwise it will only last a week or so in standby mode.
Tbh the best mini keychain EDC form factor wise is still the Olight Micro USB one, the USB C version is massive in comparison.
Posted a mini review of the keyring EDC a couple of pages back

You can't have high light output from a small form factor torch without the corresponding high heat output as a byproduct.
Edit: with the Andural firmware long pressing on the torch when it's already on should enable ramp mode so it dims and brightens smoothly with around 32/64 different levels, double tap will just enable turbo mode which generally isn't meant to be used for more than a minute at a time.

Purchased the Sofirn SP33s again. This one is not faulty.
The lower light is not bright enough for me the brighter light is excellent but within 10 minutes the torch is very hot - so I am not impressed.
Unless you're going to pay a lot extra for torch with active cooling where do you think the heat generated on high output mode is going to go?The lower light is not bright enough for me the brighter light is excellent but within 10 minutes the torch is very hot - so I am not impressed.

i've had the previous version, the i1R 2 EOS, on my key ring for 2-3 years. It certainly looks preowned now but still 100% reliable.Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
