Thanks Cyberface,
I've not opened it yet, but just looked on Hackintosh and I might be in luck.
Mine is a week 42 so it may have the old bootloader. Unfortunately I have to go out now so will check later on - I want to stay in and get it working though really!
Downgradings complete, it's now 1.1.1 but I'm tired so I'm stopping here for tonight!I've not opened it yet, but just looked on Hackintosh and I might be in luck.

Current state is:
Downgraded to 1.1.1
Unactivated
Phone shows "Activate iPhone Connect to iTunes" with the globe and emergency slider.
What's the best way to proceed from here as there seem to be a few options. iNdependance or some other route?
Thanks
Phil.

If you're a shallow posing tt, get an iPhone.
If you're that insecure that you need to randomly insult people then it's probably best that you stay hidden behind your keyboard.Yes, obviously the iPhone hardware is not state of the art, it's cheap hardware. The software *is* state of the art. Unless you're a firmware developer at Infineon or a mobile kernel developer or hacker then your 'posing tt' comments really show what an ignorant moron you are.
Who gives a about the media image? Obviously you do. Which makes *you* the shallow tt bothered about the image. I couldn't give a shit how common the iPhone gets, nor how lame an image Apple have. The iPhone OS is one hell of a decent tool.

Make sure that the bootloader is the old version before doing *any* of this, otherwise you could end up in a state of limbo without any real way of knowing where you are
I 'virginised' my 1.0.2 hacked-to-feck phone and ended up with what looked like a virgin locked unactivated 1.1.1 and followed the above instructions - the hash-asterisk calls didn't quite work out like they said (managed to get to the contacts list a lot quicker than expected) but creating the required contact and URL to the 'jailbreakme.com' server worked perfectly.
Once jailbroken, you can install the AppTapp installer, BSD userland tools and then choose which unlock tool you want - either anySIM 1.1 (patched from Elite dev team or original from 'normal' dev team) or the iPhoneSimFree commercial tool.
I found that IPSF didn't work so used anySIM 1.1 after jailbreaking, but this may have something to do with the fact that my phone has been abused since August
iNdependence won't work unless you've got iTunes 7.4.2 or earlier. If you've upgraded to iTunes 7.5 then iNdependence won't work. The TIFF exploit detailed in the link above is your best bet, but make sure you've got a Wifi connection to do it over and make sure that auto-lock is set to Never...

More Apple iHype. If you want state of the art, get a Vario III (HTC Kaiser). 3G, slide-out tilting keyboard, and built-in GPS. If you're a shallow posing tt, get an iPhone.
Got one.Prefer my ipod touch though.
HTC have a looooooong way to go in interface design though.
Battery life is shit using opera mobile too.
Does having both make me a posing twunt with depth then?
Dipstick...

Ive played with one and was unimpressed. Lovely package but pratically it gets a thumbs down from me. I'm sure the later editions of it will be better.
I mean really..?
Tech masterbaters like yourself (not an insult by the way) get off on the OS... but as a phone does it really deliver?
How much is really a nice package over abilty to deliver functionality...
Previously phones get upgraded quite often, MP3 players again get upgraded... Now tying these 2 items so closely together surely will mean the churn on Iphone users will be high.. There is no way all the non OS frothers will want to be stuck with the same combined hardware for 18 months.

I don't have one myself, I have an iPod Touch though. Got her indoors one for Xmas so I'll let her be the guinea pig then pick one up cheap from the States once the fever has subsided a bit.

Does seem to be a whole hype thing... At the end of the day it is an MP3 player, internet, and phone thingy in one, as well as a few applications. Erm, has all been done before, it doesn't just have the fashion thing like the Iphone. It's a sort of Audi TT of the gadget world...
Weak comment as practically ALL mobile phones have some fashion element. Take a look at the screen and print advertising for any new handset - they're not selling features, on the whole. Face it, nobody has tried to sell you a phone based on how ugly and cheap looking it is, have they? Blue Meanie said:
So what do you achieve by hacking? (Genuine question)
- cough*sim free*cough*
Worst aspect of it is the fact that you have to "hack" it to do these kind of things but then 90% of customers would never bother modifying their phone...
You miss my point. There is stuff out there that has all this stuff. However, Apple seem to have managed to up the hype on this extremely well. Hence it has fashion value. Granted it's not a phone, but my archos has exellent internet (using Opera), DVR, video capture, music player, PDF viewer, voice recorder, touch screen, etc, and has been out for a fairly long time in gadget terms. All apple seem to have done is attach a phone, and upped the hype, and everyone is going mental.

Oh, Apple marketing is very, very good, I have to admit. I find the rabid buying unfathomable also but Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo etc are equally good at manipulating the masses this way so it's not unique to Apple. But why should the fact that there are other devices on the market that do the same thing, deny Apple putting out a product also. Apple is just another brand like Nokia, Ericsson and, well, Archos.
Does it do it any better? That's down to personal opinion and for me there are things I think it does astonishingly well and others not so well.
Does it "feel" any better to use? For me, I have to say it's the nicest interface on a mobile device that I've ever used (and that includes an Archos and many other MP3 players and, sadly, many mobile phones over the years). Is that important? To some, yes. To others, not so much.
That's the benefit of freedom of choice.

Apparently not all UK phones have the new bootloader either... if you have hacker inclinations then jailbreak it, install the BSD tools, install minicom and the minirc.dfl file to access the baseband modem, and issue AT+XGENDATA to the modem.
If the Bootloader comes back with 03.09_M3S2 then you can use anySIM 1.2 and it will unlock successfully.
If the bootloader is 04.06_M3S2 then it's the sneaky new UK bootloader and anySIM won't work (yet).
Help! I get: minicom: cannot open /dev/tty.baseband: Resource busyIf the Bootloader comes back with 03.09_M3S2 then you can use anySIM 1.2 and it will unlock successfully.

Is this pilot error? Where do I need to run Minicom from on the phone and with what parameters?
