I've not read this thread as it'll be full of "ones better than the other" remarks. If you don't do what I did then you're a fool.

BUY ONE FROM TESCO's!!!!
and have a play for a month.

Seriously. Buy one, try it for 28 days and if you don't like it then take it back for a no messing about refund.....they don't even look in the friggin box!!!

We got a Macbook about 2 months ago and I liked it a lot but misses just couldn't get on with making it do all the things her old Windows laptop did at work. So, after 21 days of use we boxed it back up and took it back. £700 refund, no questions asked and they didn't even open the box...could av been full of bricks!!!.

WE straighway went and got a HP laptop (£600) that was really nice, my wife was then told 2 weeks after that work would be buying her a new laptop. So we took that back yesterday after 3 weeks use and same again, Full refund, no messing about and again, they didn't even check the contents of the box.

Thank you very much for all the helpful replies. LDNREVs you need to calm yourself down a tad. this isn't a ghetto in peckham wink.

the annoying thing is i am now torn between a nice little vaio cr series and a macbook.

what to do? oh what to do?

on a more practical note and i need to visit an apple shop for this really. are there any cleanliness issues that arise from having a lovely white laptop? not that im a dirty person wink but everyday use for 8 hours may take its toll.

Entirely up to you of course.. But without going over the same old points/arguments again.. There is little reason not to get the MacBook.. If you don't like the Apple way, then put windows on. At least you have the choice. Run both at the same time if you want. But personally speaking, I can't really think of any reason why you wouldn't get on with a Mac / OS X.

P,

PS, Tescos sell Macs now??

Well, you did start with the 'mac fanboy' stuff, if truth be told. (I have a mac, and 2 pc's, so can't be considered to be either! Phew!)

The irony is I own the most expensive Macbook there is... so no bias here.. I merely pointed out that Cyberface used language such as 'M$' and 'Windows shit box' which makes him a fanboy in my eyes..... and fanboys are by their very nature 'simpletons'. Cyber, just face it...... you're an educated com nerd who slips into fanboyism on the odd occasion. Wish I hadn't hit such a nerve since being called a ing moron and a prick would suggest you're a little upset. Calm down eh!

wink
Why does owning the 'most expensive macbook there is' give you any credibility? The bottom line is that I tried to offer useful advice based on the fact that the hardware is the same, you make your decision based on software and maybe the requirement to *buy* new software, the cost of which should be included in the final total.

And you steam in with a load of insults aimed at me, and particularly calling me a 'simpleton' is going to get a robust reaction. Following that up with 'nerd' and finishing all your insulting posts with a wink doesn't get away from the fact that you are trolling and being insulting. Finishing such bile with a smile in the pub would end up with you in hospital, it doesn't make your attitude any more acceptable. The fact that I have some knowledge of IT that I choose to help people out with on this forum doesn't make me a 'com nerd' - you don't know what I do for a living, I'm not a computer tech or support bod. This forum would be a lot poorer if any requests for help were met with your moronic shite rather than real information, as has been pointed out.

Well done, you've made me angry, you win. As to owning the most expensive macbook, if you want to get into yet another pissing contest then you'll lose that one, unless you bought a couple of 2GB sticks for it back when they were more than £450 a piece wink

Keep chortling away to yourself, nobody else is finding you funny.

the bigger ones do yeah. The clever way would be to get one on your credit card, have a play for a week. Make a decision if it's for you and take it back for a refund. Then buy one cheaper online.

What am I spending my £400 on ?
Thoughtful design. The fact a bunch of people have actually thought about their users rather than just slinging a load of hardware components together. There are Windows boxes properly designed too, and they'll cost the same as a Mac.
We were talking about the bundled software, which apparently exceeds the putative £400 mark for value.

I in my own experience have found windows machines that aren't maintained and have been used by numptys like me are about as stable a jelly bridge. I never maintain my mac apart from deleting crap when the hard disc gets full runs fine.
And yet I appear to have one that does. 5 year old XP desktop, full of rubbish, nothing gets deleted, never maintain it. That is where any bit of shareware lands first.

What do I do that is different ?

WOW, a hard nut! I'd like to publicy apologise to Cyberface for calling him an Apple Mac fanboy.. I never realised it would cause him so much upset and distress. Despite typing generic fanboy terms, such as referring to MS as 'M$', he is just here to help everyone with his superior knowledge of computers. He also owns a better Mac than me it would seem + he would put me in hospital if I were to talk to him face to face like I have here.

rolleyes

Calling me a ing moron may end with the same result... simpleton wink

Dude, It's becoming increasingly clear that you are (in my humble mac fanboy opinion) a Weapons Grade Knob-end, clearly incapable of constructive postings.

I notice that at no time during this thread (and others you have contributed to) have you actually used logic and reason to further your argument, simply using inflammatory remarks aimed at goading does not a discussion make.

My sympathies go out to anyone who knows you over this festive period (assuming you are as socially disfucntional in real life as your postings on here)

Apologies once again to Cyber and Burger and RoadRailer. I realise the error of my ways and now acknowledge what an insult it was to Cyber, the terms I used. I shall never again grace these boards with such venomous spiteful language as 'fanboy'.. I would not like to incur the wrath of Cyberface as it seems he will be putting me in hospital should we ever meet. I'm now scared and I am reflecting on the error of my ways. I'd like to be left now so that I may grow up and one day be as mature as other people here - maybe one day I will grow up to use swear words on the internets and make lame suggestions of violence!...... if only. A dream I have to one day be so mature.

I know no-one in the IT industry who uses an Apple as their home laptop.
I do though - and I have many programmer friends who do to.

The reason is that you get a full Linux/unix like command line, built in terminal, IDE, compilers. debuggers, X windows, POSIX compliant interfaces etc.
For web programming you can also freely add Apache, MySQL and of course if comes with a highly integrated Java. And of course the one machine can test stuff on Opera, Safari and Firefox.

I'm not saying it's the first choice for MS Windows programming - but for all other types, it really rocks. It also does NFS with makes linux server and CVS use a doddle, although many people use SVN etc.

For me and my mates, it's like a well behaved linux box with no suspend-resume headaches and some really very good apps (including the iLife suite). In Linux I have to battle with the machine being tilted towards MS Windows - on the Apple, everything just works fine straight out of the box.

It's ironic because of the fluffy arty image of apple, but for programmers it's the underlying OS and command line that makes life with apple so useful smile
