Its actually not from a GUI point of view for the user, its a more robust looking version of Vista TBH - I never had any huge problems with Vista but a lot of others did.
The last version of Windows that I had much enterprise-level experience of was XP. Like many, I've had no real issues with Vista, and neither have my clients (albeit much smaller scale clients now). I've not had many problems with 7 on my own boxes either, so I was interested to hear about the "radical differences", especially since 7 internally is 6.1 to Vista's 6.0.

My own experience, backed up by what little I've read, is that 7 isn't much more than a refined Vista - and that's likely no bad thing.
I suppose you have to try it, however the speed difference is immense and it compares very favourably to XP. In some instances it's faster however this cannot be proven 100% yet since there are no complete optimised driver sets for all pieces of hardware.

The memory management has also been improved dramatically and the fluidity of the whole OS is a dream to use. Very nice and quick.

To prove the speed, I have Windows 7 Ultimate RC installed on my Acer Aspire One netbook running with 1.5GB RAM and a 1.6Ghz Atom CPU.

On XP it ran brilliantly with no issues. I then tried Vista and it slowed to an absolute crawl. The UI was unusable as it was jerky and slow, and the time applications took to launch was dire.

I then tried the original Windows 7 Build 6980 (I think - pre-Beta), and it ran brilliantly. I've been using every build since then and currently use the RC and it runs very well.

The only major down side is the battery life in Windows 7 is less than that of the battery life in XP. I presume this has something to do with the 3D front end engine but I'm unsure of this. It could also be down to drivers but again I don't know.

Other than this, it's a great OS and miles better than Vista. Hence I've ordered both the premium (for the netbook), and professional (for the main PC), versions.

I was going to purchase a new laptop in September, now if I do so it will have widows Vista (which I do not want) is it now worth me waiting for windows 7 in October?

I have been told that I will be eligible for a free up grade when W7 is released if I purchase a laptop in September, is this true?

Sorry if I wasn't clear - I used XP until Vista RC was available. Then I used that with no problems until 7 Beta, then 7 RC, both of which I've used with no problems.

That's the bit I'm struggling to quantify. Vista was fine for me. On the same hardware, 7 maybe seems a shade quicker, but generally the slowest part of the system is me. hehe Everything you've said backs up what I've thought - it's like Vista, just a bit better.

Yup. It's supplied by the manufacturers. Go for it!

Of course double check that this is true, if it's from a main stream supplier such as Dell or similar then it will be upgradeable but if it's from a smaller supplier it might not be the case or they may "forget"...

If I have read things right, there is no upgrade path from either Vista or XP it has to be a clean installation,if you have the hard disk space/partitions available a dual boot set up maybe worthwhile.
The reason there is no upgrade path is due to the EU. All the anti-trust crap and how MS had a monopoly.

IIRC the E version which we get won't have IE in it. It is jsut too hard to upgrade the machine and remove IE.

Makes you wonder how you will get on the internet without a browser.

Other countries can buy upgrade discs.

You will get on the internet just fine, remember the internet is made up of more than just the World Wide Web. The first automatic update available (although optional) will be... you guessed it IE 8

Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the cheeky buggers have bumped up the prices for the pre-order of Windows 7. (Not surprisingly due to demand).

Instead of £44 for Premium, it's now £75. And Professional is now £179 instead of £89 as it was yesterday!!!

I wanted another copy of premium but not at £75 when it should be available at £44!!!

WTF!!?!?

Is professional worth the extra money? What are Windows XP productivity tools?

Which should I get for an only-computer laptop?

Videos, games (occasionally), photos, office stuff and general browsing. Is it worth going for Pro?

Haven't checked, but see if there's a 'prices ruling at date of despatch' clause somewhere... wink

If it's an every day use computer, then go for Pro. For a netbook, Premium is enough.

Is Windows 7 likely to be able to run most older programmes? Is it backwards-compatible?

If you get the Pro version, you get an XP virtualisation mode which allows you to run all XP applications natively without any compatibility issues.

You do however need to be sure your motherboard has a virtualisation mode in the hardware for this to work. (You can check this in the BIOS).

It is NOT however included in the Premium edition.
