skyray king 5000 on the way from some far flung ebay seller. yes, yes, i know 5000 lm would burn a hole in granite and it'll be 2300 at a push, but i had a skyray 3xT6-818 (4000 claimed) and that threw out ludicrous light from only 2 18650s. sadly, i dropped it from quite a height and it's now dead.

currently forced to use a cheapo led torch i got from decathlon for night time pooch walks, and i can hardly see what my next step is into! misplaced my P7 in a recent house move, and it's 'in a box'.

Short term I'd recommend one of these - nowhere near the claimed output but more than adequate for dog walking etc. UK based item, took about a week for mine to arrive:

Once your Shanghai special arrives it can be chucked in the car or something.

Shall be interesting to see how much they trim that down to - it's not as powerful as a T7/P7 but there's not a huge difference in practical use.

Ignore the Lumens thing and try and find beam shots. Some companies claim the chip lumen figure, other reference a measured output from x distance, which is far more accurate.

I would stay away from rechargeable torches if I were you as they do lose power over time. I'd also avoid the 18650 cell based torches as the cells are very twitchy in terms of bursting into flames when charged, and also are quite temp sensitive in WRT to storage. The good ones don't flame but are a nightmare to get hold off as I found this morning and they're expensive at ~ 12 quid each.

Personally I would go for an AA based torch and get some eneloop or similar low-discharge rate rechargeable cells and then if you find you ever find yourself with a battery that needs charging then you can always pop in some disposable cells.

I have the P14 Lenser amongst other various 18650 and CR123 based lamps and torches and that only claims 172 lumens yet has a much longer throw than my 800 lumen ebay special. Mine was used for night Search and Rescue with Mountain Rescue so it's had a good amount of proper use - and interestingly most of the team also opted for lensers of various models because they are light and AA based torches are - whilst lacking the ultimate brightness of the LION cells - very very dependable.

Decide on what you want - brightness over practicality - then get a 18650 based ebay / DX special - if you want very reliable and practical at the sacrifice of a little brightness then get a Fenix or a Lenser.
Thanks for taking the time to share this info with me. It certainly has given something to think about

Bought this yesterday. Nowhere near that many lumens but takes standard batteries and has variable beam. Cheap too. Will see how it compares to my other torches (ssc p7 and some old cree mc e I think) when it arrives.

What do you think would represent a 'good' buy for that then? I'm fairly tempted to try and get one.

Pretty poor deal from Amazon - you can still buy it cheaper elsewhere: <£30

Black Friday deal was £24.50, £35.39 is Amazon's regular price.

I've bought one, will make a good glove box torch.

On Black Friday Amazon run deals on specific stock which are 'released' for sale at intervals throughout the day. The stock is discounted (some more generously than others) but only a limited amount of stock is discounted. Depending on how good the deal is/how much stock there is will determine how quickly the deal ends.

In the case of the torch, it sold out at £24.50 within a minute and therefore is no longer available for £24.50, hence the "was" wink

Just ordered up an Eagletac D25A2 Clicky, XM-L T6, 277 Lumens OTF. Saved 20% buying it from the States.

What's the difference between this P7 at £49.99 and 130hrs battery life http://www.maplin.co.uk/led-lenser-cree-p7-high-pe... and this P7 at £39.99 with 64hrs battery life and a free P3? http://www.maplin.co.uk/led-lenser-p7-professional... Is the first any better, or should I just go for the cheaper one with the extra torch?
Anyone? I want to get my Xmas present sorted this week!

The P7 will be the same in either kit. Battery life will be the same too. They have compared life at different power levels, I suspect.

My cheapo Chinese torch arrived today, somewhat slow on delivery but the seller was good on the comms:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120989022447
3 brightness levels, one strobe and one SOS. I paid a quid less than they're advertising it. No idea about charging the batteries though, they say they've got re/discharging protection circuit, dunno if the charger's LED will change colour when they're fully charged. When the power is off the LED is green, goes orangey/red when charging, who knows what it'll do after that? :/ nice that it came with two batteries though and AAA adapter.

Cheers,
Rob

Ultra-fire batteries are - somewhat aptly given their name - prone to catching fire when charged. Make sure you place your charger on something incombustible.

I've had a few and whilst they aren't great WRT to longevity, I've never - touches wood - had one go up in flames. I wouldn't leave them on charge overnight however.

I've been reading up on charging 18650s and the like as I have some on their way too. Consensus seems to be to remove them from the charger asap after they are finished and not to run them too low.
