Black Friday deal was £24.50, £35.39 is Amazon's regular price.

I've bought one, will make a good glove box torch.
Oops, sorry

"was" - it's still Friday here?
On Black Friday Amazon run deals on specific stock which are 'released' for sale at intervals throughout the day. The stock is discounted (some more generously than others) but only a limited amount of stock is discounted. Depending on how good the deal is/how much stock there is will determine how quickly the deal ends.

In the case of the torch, it sold out at £24.50 within a minute and therefore is no longer available for £24.50, hence the "was" wink
Sold out in a lot less than a minute, missed it even though I was hovering over the button when it counted down to 0!

Ultra-fire batteries are - somewhat aptly given their name - prone to catching fire when charged. Make sure you place your charger on something incombustible.

Nice, fills me with confidence wink
I've had a few and whilst they aren't great WRT to longevity, I've never - touches wood - had one go up in flames. I wouldn't leave them on charge overnight however.
I've been reading up on charging 18650s and the like as I have some on their way too. Consensus seems to be to remove them from the charger asap after they are finished and not to run them too low.
Matches what I've read too. That and store in a cool place. Brands that recommended seem to be Panasonic and anything that's a re-branded panny, such as Sennybor, XTAR, etc.

I've got some Trustfire protected ones on the way. I'm looking at getting a better Xtar SP2 charger though as it's been tested and proven to ACTUALLY shut off charge once they are full.
The other advice I read was (if your light uses two cells) to only use them in pairs from new, do not mix and match.

I've heard that Ultrafire (over and above any others) are notorious for catching fire. I personally use Trustfire ones linked below - £7 for a pair, and so far I've not had any catch fire. I've had them for about a year or so.

Tried to read this thread but still a bit confused.

What can I buy my old man for Xmas which will have a massive wow factor. Would like near to 500 lumen, working on normal AA batteries. Prepared to spend up to £80.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Hello torchheads byebye

I'm now going to fall into the category of "shouldnt have looked at this thread" but I'm going to use my wife as an excuse!

We've recently moved from the UK to Australia where things are quite a lot darker. The street lights (where available) are spaced further apart meaning there is less light for walking the dog etc. So I'd like to buy myself my wife a nice bright LED torch.

She also likes to spend a lot of time buying old stuff and doing it up - The first part of this involves driving into the middle of nowhere to find a house at night that has a tiny house number positioned in the dark some 20-50 feet from the roadside.

So what we need is something that is compact enough to walk the dog yet at the same time bright enough to shine from a car window when hunting for a house number a long way from the roadside.

I used to work for an LED downlight manufacturer so I'm well aware of the way some sellers over-rate the lumen output of their LEDs (many measure the LED chip brightness before it has the protective "blob" applied). Therefore I'm looking for recommendations to view alongside spec sheets.

ANy suggestions?

LED Lenser P7/T7. My standard answer but it really is a good torch.

Budget might be handy for others to make a recommendation though.

I've just bought (and it arrived last night) an Eagletac D25A2 Clicky and I'm very impressed with it. Lots of different modes for all sorts of scenarios (more than you'll probably need tbh!) and comes in a decent quality pouch.

Having just bought a couple of torches with Low>Medium>High>Strobe>SOS I find them a real irritation. 3 modes is the most I'll ever use (Low>Medium>High) - for me the extra modes get in the way and are a pointless gimmick.

Yup, and to be fair that eagletac sounds more complicated than most....

That link said:
Basic - Press on the switch button until it clicks to turn on the flashlight. Press the switch again until it clicks to switch off the light.
Access output groups 1 & 2 - Tight the head to access group 2 output. Loose the head to access group 1 output.
Switch between output level - With the flashlight on, slightly press the switch and release (within 1s) to switch to the next output.
Programmable Features - 1) Moonlight output - dim or increase the entire output range of the group 1 output. Toggle this setting starting with head loosen, turn on the light, and then repeat tight and loose for three times. 2) Mode memory (D25A22 Clicky and D25A2 Clicky only) - remebers the last output in group 1. To toggle this setting, with head tighten, turn on the light, and repeat loose and tight for three times.
wobble Sounds like modes for modes sake rather than having a real use, although perhaps the instructions don't do it justice.

lol! It does sound far more complicated than it is tbh.

Head tight and turn on, gives you max brightness.

Head loose and turn on gives you low, click for medium, then click for high. It then loops through those again and into the silly modes. They don't get in the way at all.

I wanted something well built and bright that runs on AAs (but I am going to get some 14500s for it!)

Anyone else have a Maglite? I've had mine for about 20 years and I've just knackered the original bulb by dropping the torch. I've just ordered a LED upgrade bulb for it for £12. It's the 3xD battery version. Anyone else done the same?

A mate has, it wasn't as powerful as my Lenser T7. I daresay some will depend on which LED upgrade, but I did similar with a 2xAA maglite and it was fairly piddly.

What you need is a 'thrower' a torch that throws a tight beam a long way.

LED Lenser do this as do many others.

This is a good one:

I have two, the first one is 2xD cells converted to take 2x18650s with a similar upgrade to yours, from here:

http://thetorchsite.co.uk/TTS_3_Watt_Cree_Torch_Bu...

I was able to fit the 3/4 D Cell LED because of the higher output of the 18650s

It's not bad.

I also have one of these 2xD Cell Maglites running 2x 32600s converted by Jayrob in the US, an awesome 1000 lumens.

I have a 2 x D Cell Mag that I've recently upgraded to LED, bought the bulb from Amazon I think for about £13.00. Light is brighter & promised extended battery life seems to be true, don't use it much though. I'm sure a newer torch would be better but for £13 it made sense to update the old girl & keep her going.

How much did that set you back?

I did once get half the gear I needed for that ROP mod that was talked about many moons ago - never got around to sorting out the reflector and glass (which means I could only use the low Peli bulb which was on par with the normal mag bulb.) Maybe one day I'll find the cash to finish it off as the end result is impressive, if slightly pointless.
