Try pointing your dns address out to your ISP's DNS servers rather than your router.
The prob is (was) that his DNS queries weren't rejected by the Yahoo server. A correctly functioning DNS client would have received a rejection, ergo his DNS client isn't performing lookups wherever it's pointed.

Have you rebooted since?

Look in the system log for red errors related to your network.

Will Simon ever get online? Can TheGriffalo really be that good? Have Microsoft finally gone too far?
Find out, only on Pistonheads!

Cleared all the logs, rebooted and noticed:

System Log said:
IRQARB: ACPI BIOS does not contain an IRQ for the device in slot 6, function 0.
Now not having done a degree in martian I'm not entirely sure what this signifies...a problem with the network card?

Could be, depending on what's in slot 6. Go into your BIOS and make sure the setting for "plug and play OS" or whatever it's called is enabled.

Can you please disable wireless on your "good" machine and connect to the Router using the same cable and port on the router as the "bad" machine.

In one swoop you'll eliminate Router (hardware and configuration) and the Cable from the list of possibilities.

OK, just seen this post having got back from borrowing a router from someone else. Plugged it in, switched on, and hey presto, here I am posting from the "bad" machine. Evidently it wasn't Vista at all, it was an errant router. Strangely, I could connect perfectly well through it using wireless on my laptop, just not ethernet wired from my desktop.

Got both wired and wireless working now with the borrowed router.

Well, I've led you all on a merry dance. Thanks for all your help once again!

EDIT: LordGrover - I'm sorry if this is an anti-climatic end to the soap!

That Router has a whole bunch of stuff that can be configured, for both Wired and Wireless SEPARATELY, especially in the Firewall.

Before you bin it, it might be worth resetting it to factory settings.
