Fair enough, just seems alien to me that someone would spend £700 on... nothing. At least you're honest about it, though. I do wonder how many people talk themselves into the latest iPhone/Galaxy/whateverpieceoftech and end up feeling like they've made a mistake but can't be honest about it.
To be honest I got sucked up into the hype. I was going to buy the watch anyway (had a Series 2) and just kinda thought "bigger screen phone yes please". I honestly didn't think about the differential in price, and it wasn't until I actually calculated it in my post above that I'd actually worked out exactly how much I'd spent to upgrade.I'd actually dwelled on it a bit today since posting earlier. £700 is like a whole new Galaxy S9 phone, and almost an iPhone XR...
Kinda funny in retrospect how big a deal people were making about the first £999 phone, and it's gone beyond that and then some.

I’d call it an unfair video. The fake customer asked if there were other options and was told ‘not if you want it repaired officially in this store’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2_SZ4tfLns
Looking at the XS max at a store 2 weeks ago, I said hmm pricey isn’t it and the chap said ‘it has the most advanced camera in the world. It rivals the best DSLR cameras’. Even an idiot knows that’s untrue. They are salesman.

Let me know how you get on with it.I think preparation is the key. Go to town with the wet wipe thing - do not miss doing right up to the edges. Dry it with the provided cloth and then, if you think it's needed, use the sticky to remove dust. Position the protector carefully and let it gently touch the screen.... mine did the rest on it's own with no further help. No bubbles.
I think these particular ones work well because they don't cover the very last millimetre of curved screen - they cover just the flat bit.
I put mine on a couple of weeks ago and it's still perfect.

They didn't even try to repair it - they just opted to go down the most expensive route (neither of which was necessary). Why bother even offering to "repair" something if you're not going to? That's not as isolated incident - they've tried to stop a Norwegian repair shop (which they lost): https://www.macrumors.com/2018/04/13/apple-lawsuit...
They also use ICE in the US to confiscate iPhone parts coming in from China.

You could find the same practices at Main car dealers. Plug the product into a diagnostic and it said X. It’s not a conspiracy. Anyone with a few smarts knows third party options are a lot cheaper. You can spend 12k on an iMac Pro. Is it fair the warranty is 12 months? No it’s not but that’s the deal unless you take out insurance or go down some other consumer protection route. Porsche in the Uk is not that different. Change the battery and tyres. No extended warranty.
This is way worse than car dealers. This is more like what John Deere did in California recently. You buy their st but technically you can't do anything with it (because they own the IP to the source code and other crap) other than use and if it breaks down get down on your knees and suck on that mushroom hoping that your masters will fix it (it's not guaranteed they will be willing to even if it is technically possible and quick to do by someone with knowledge!) for you without totally destroying your anus in the process. Apple (and others too) is on a path to destroying independent repairs altogether by either suing and setting a precedent like they did with that Norwegian fellah or by deploying devices that will render the device useless unless reactivated by an authorised service (if they even fancy doing it).
EDIT: I've just watched the CBC News video, the Rossmann guy is a well know Apple independent repair shop and Apple BS debunker. I've been watching his videos for years now and he's opinion on these things (together with other youtubers who also deal with this) is as objective as it can get.
Here's his thoughts on the Norwegian case and war on refurbishing in general.

PS I own Apple hardware just FYR.

I would say these are even better:https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07H2XJKSQ/ref...
They curve around the edges and have a black border and are virtually unnoticeable, especially with a case fitted.
I have one fitted with a silicone case and you can't see it all all.

what is the best screen protector to use these days?
I paid £15 for them to fit one in store - they did a perfect job (using a jig helps )robbieduncan said:
