I’m amazed Apple have never offered a mini or “Nano” iPhone.
The main reason I bought my iPhone 7 a year ago was that it was one of the smallest decent phones available. Them all getting bigger is a tad annoying.A full screen SE in the style of the X would be perfect I think.

I admit I like a bigger screen on my phone.... at least until I bough an iPad. Now they are a little too similar (my iPad is a Mini).
TBH if Apple offered a full screen Nano iPhone the size of a credit card (obviously thicker though), I'd be very interested. I'd want the same capabilities as a high end large screen model though, good camera, etc and nice screen. I would see this as a premium end phone still.

I'm hoping the X will feel like a step up from the 6S Plus. I felt the 7 Plus and 8 Plus weren't a worthwhile upgrade.
Those with a Mous Limitless 2.0 case, will a standard magnetic vent mount work with the Mous? I assume they'll repel? The Mous vent mount is damn pricey...
If they don't work together maybe I can join the two with a ferrous metal plate on my Spigen magnetic vent mount. I've grown to love the magnetic vent mount, definitely don't want to go back to a sprung one.

Strangely, IDC say there is no demand for small phones. In fact demand is for bigger phones.
I’d like a small phone for evenings but isn’t a 4g watch the same thing.
This. I’d like a small phone for evenings but isn’t a 4g watch the same thing.
For everyone wanting a small phone surely the Apple Watch ticks that box?
So too small, also if it's on your wrist, you can't use two hands when typing and usability may be low if you wear it on the wrist of the hand you'd normally use.
Also there are times you may not wear a watch or may not want to wear a watch, but still want to have a phone with you.
Something credit card sized (height x width) and the same depth as say an iPhone 6 would be ideal as a "nano" phone. Keep all the functionality. and user experience. Qwerty keyboard would still work. As a full screen offering you'd actually have a screen similar in size to an SE/5C, just much smaller overall dimensions.

Perhaps I'm being simplistic but what is stopping you from simply using one of the older Apple iPhones that is the right size for you? No one is forcing you to upgrade to an X(S) or whatever.
iPhone SE can run iOS 12...
I have a 6 Plus as my main phone.iPhone SE can run iOS 12...
Apple have never made an iPhone the size of a credit card - ever. There is none to choose from.
And I'm not wanting to buy an essentially rubbish outdated model. I want the latest model in a smaller more pocket friendly size. I'm on a computer most of the day and have a Mac and iPad at home. These days I just don't need my phone to be big and tbh nano sized full screen iPhone would be brilliantly awesome. Much more comfy in a pocket, but with all the same ability.
5S can run iOS and that's a couple of generations behind the SE, processor-wise. I use an SE and it should be good for a couple more years yet.
Palm (or rather the people who bought the Palm name) have a tiny little smartphone out, but it's intended to be a companion device to a big phone, a bit like a smartwatch. Like the cellular Apple watches, no SIM, it uses some sort of esim, so you can only get it as an add-on to an existing phone contract.

I agree, I thought the iPhone 4 was the perfect size.Apple have never made an iPhone the size of a credit card - ever. There is none to choose from.

I got an Xs this week having used a 7+ for the last couple of years. I went for the 7+ because of the larger screen size but with the X models having a screen size that's on par, seems like an ideal balance.
So far I'm very pleased I opted for it. Also this is the first iPhone since my first (4) that feels like a step up from the previous models in a big way. The 4 to the 5 was as underwhelming as the 6 to 7 but this actually feels like it brings something more, not just a bigger screen or a bit faster.
So far so good with the X for me. Loving FaceiD and the extra screen real estate and smaller form factor than my 6s Plus. Feels like a big upgrade. So far I'm very pleased I opted for it. I do keep swiping up to get to the control center though, and end up at the home screen, and the gesture to get to the app switcher has been a bit hit and miss, but i'm sure i'll adjust.
