OLED screens don’t use a backlight. You’re talking bks.

I too thought the good part about LED’s was that blacks don’t get turned on so save battery life as well as being ‘true’ black.

XR is tempting indeed and there are reports the battery lift is the best of the lot as its not powering that oled display.
I thought one of the benefits of OLED was it had lower power consumption due to not having to power black pixels like LCD does?

If both the OLED and LCD panel were asked to show a totally black image, the OLED screen would use less power as nothing would be lit, whereas the LCD panel would still have to power its backlight.

If both the OLED and LCD panel were asked to show a typical image, where there's very little true black, the OLED screen would use more power as it's lighting each individual pixel rather than just one fat backlight.

Overall, OLED will use more power than LCD but it will always look better because it has absolute control of each pixel. LCD can do a good impression of it but the reality is that LCD just isn't that great.

Very good explanation there. OLED's are basically like plasmas in terms of how they operate and one of the key plasmas features was that they are power hungry.

Xiaomi are getting around the front camera bezel/notch thing with the Mi Mix 3. The screen slides down to show the camera and sensors behind it in the phone body. https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/new-product/mobile-p...

Oppo have the same with the FindX thats been out a good few months now - I looked at one in Thailand a couple of weeks ago and it was impressive but the pricetag of c.£700 put me off. I dont mind paying flagship money if there is a chance to recoup an element in 12-18mths when I move it on (ala iPhone / Samsung), but with the Oppo there was literally nil chance of this IMHO
A mate had the Oppo one did look very nice and the screen significantly better to my eyes than my X but it broke within two weeks. The screen stopped responding to touch so he got it changed to something different.

I went to have a look at the XR today, it felt too big compared with my 8. I prefer the size f the 8 so I’m not going to change for now.

Agree, I don’t want anything too big in my pocket.

I’d struggle to use it one handed

Just a heads up iOS 12.1 was released last night which enables the dual sim feature (if your on EE).

More info below but it looks like you need to request a e-sim pack which can either be posted to you(call 150) or you can get one from an EE store. I will pick one up on the weekend.

The carriers hate eSIMs, as they fear it will make switching too easy.

But surely they’re normally protected by their contracts? My deal with 3 mobile is sim only renewed annually.

Oh cool, that's good to know.
Unless you switch that setting off, at least.

I've often wondered if Apple could become an airtime provider? If their devices became locked to their own data provision it would be game, set and match wouldn't it? eSIM technology seems well positioned for this.
