Wondered into Covent Garden Apple the other day after work. Totally underwhelmed by the iP8, I genuinely thought I was looking at an iP7. Hardly seems any different from the outset. Will wait for the X.
You didn't really need to see it in person to decide it looks the same did you? When all the cases for the 7 also fit the 8...

The main features of the 8 are the battery life, the camera, and wireless charging. If you're not looking at any of those then you're not going to be impressed.
Didn't go there specifically, I was walking past the Covent Garden store and thought I would see what the fuss was about. The only reason I was looking to upgrade was the portrait mode in the 8plus but the iPhoneX has it in the non-plus version so I will wait for that instead.

If you have a charger from a Macbook that'll do the "fast charging" as far as I know.
That is correct.q
I have a couple of chargers for my MacBook - but can't see how I'd get power from it to the phone...
I think it is the latest MacBook which is usb c connected. I would guess that you Judy take the usb cable out and put the usb to lightning cable in.
You'll also need a USB C to lightning cable to enable fast charging with one of the MacBook or MacBook Pro chargers.

And will remain fast up until, ooh, about a week before the iPhone 11 launch, I imagine.

I'm guessing there won't be one. Companies try to avoid using number 9.

Apple had no problem making iOS 9?

I'd guess that they will call the next generation of 'traditional' shaped phones iPhone 9, that will release alongside the iPhone XI, and then the year after that there will only be an iPhone XII.

iPhone 8 only exists to justify its own price increase and to soften the iPhone X price.

If it was a 7S costing £100 more people would be unhappy.
If it was a 7S and didn't cost £100 more, the gap in price between the 7S and X would feel more chasmic.

As it is, it's basically a 7 but with Qi charging. In any other cycle it would be a 7S.

The 8 exists because of OLED Display supply constraints.

I'm very sceptical of any kind of "supply chain issues" news in the buildup to the release....

Apple are too big and too powerful financially not to have had their supply chain locked down months ago. When the iPhone X was announced there wasn't an ambiguous "coming sometime fall 2017" release date, like with the AirPods, there was a specific date. There is no chance that Apple would miss this date, and therefore no chance that they wouldn't know exact quantities on hand of the bill of materials of the phone, including the OLED screen.

It is in Apple's best interest to "leak" stories about supply chain trouble, and how "if you don't order an X at launch you won't get one until 2020!". There would be a number of people who were on the fence, or otherwise prepared to wait until early next year, who will believe the hype and decide instead to order on launch day.

There has been an almost incessant stream of these stories in the buildup to the preorder date, and that's no coincidence imo.

The constraints are true. OLED panels are difficult to manufacture. Each panel will yield approx 200 iPhone screens but the manufacturing yield is as low as high 50s%. Apple would roll out OLED across the range if it could but there is no where enough supply. A typical Samsung/LG plant can cost several billion and take 24 months to come online. With any 'new' technology yields improve over time and it is simply a huge risk to throw billions at something before you know a market exists. And Flash (SSD) was exactly the same. I understand Apple is investing in OLED via LG which will alleviate some of the reliance on Samsung in the long term.

True, but the generation produced today is high years ahead of that produced in 2010. Thinner (.05mm), less power hungry and much greater pixel density

AMOLED (G)
Super AMOLED (G2)
Super AMOLED PLUS (G3) and so on

Indeed, but don't all of the current top line Samsung phones use their latest(ish) OLED technology, rather than LCD?

I'm not sure how many devices they have using OLED. It's easy to explain why they could. They ensure they keep enough supply for themselves. Currently samsung produce about 85-90% of all OLED panels. 350M units in 2017, over 500M in 2017 and a you growth rates of almost 40%. It's a process of catch-up in capacity (build new plants) and transitioning to new generations of tech. Again, just like SSDs. The investment is colossal.
Flexible screens are not far away.

Factor in current annual sales of iPhone of circa 200 Million units. A full model switch to OLED would simply not have been achievable.

I'm going to order a 8 tomorrow, but want to ensure I have a case sorted for it's arrival. I used to have the following, but they are not making them for the 8 (yet). Any recommendations for something similar?

Also, screen protector required? I got mine fitted at apple before and it's been great.

Isn’t the 7 identical to the 8? 6S will still have headphone cutout.

Didn't see the 7 option earlier! I'll get that then.
