It's easy to make various random printers work with OS X.

hehe
swine wink

i think i got as far as cups, but ran into the Username and Passwd. i could not find that bit of info anywhere on the net and tried everything i could think of. but nothing let me past that prompt.

you know the score I'm assuming - what is the magic username to get through it. to be honest, when I last tried doing all this stuff I wasted so much time (absolute hours) I gave up never to return.

(i will smack my head against the table when you tell me something very dumb and obvious about the username.)

WTF were you doing tinman0 - trying to compile it from scratch? Props if so, but you *really* don't need to do that.

Download the universal binary package from Gutenprint and install it. It'll ask for an administrator name and password - the user you set the machine up with will be an administrator, so just your normal login and password will do smile If you're security minded and set the machine up with an admin account, but run as a non-privileged user, then you'll need to put in the name and password of the user you set the machine up with.

It's quite tricky to set OS X up with no admin accounts and a root account with no usable password, so I doubt you've done that...

I've just got through the username and password problem on cups. Do i feel a bit thick now. I think I was getting tired one evening and skimmed past something that said permissions on ownership of a file, and now it becomes obvious what the username to use in cups is. My name. banghead

Can't remember what I compiled but it wasn't cups. Gonna come back to this thread in a few minutes. Gutenprint just downloaded so about to install that. I have a feeling that Gutenprint didn't install last time as it wasn't a happy Leopard compatible package, hence going in a different direction.

The reason I didn't use Gutenprint is that it doesn't have the 2300DL drivers that I need. Knew it was something obvious.

Failed with:/usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertokm2430dl failed

This driver should work, but no idea what failed at the moment.

Thanks for all the responses. I feel fairly sure on the apple front now!

However a situation has arisen where here in oz i can do a novated lease and basically salary sacrifice a laptop.

This turns a $2000 Apple Laptop into a $1300 cost due to GST savings (think no VAT) and save 31.5-41.5% on the tax cost as well.

I think a MacBook Air beckons for under $1300!! (or c.600 quid.)
